Romney, accepting party nomination, says Obama has failed to deliver on hope and change

TAMPA, Fla. - Republican Mitt Romney, in the most important speech in his presidential campaign, told a television audience of millions that Barack Obama had failed to deliver on his soaring promises of hope and change and that it is time for new leadership during tough times in America.

Romney accepted the Republican presidential nomination late Thursday, casting himself as the best hope to lift the struggling U.S. economy and "restore the promise of America." He pledged to make the U.S. energy independent, cut the deficit, negotiate new free trade agreements and create 12 million jobs.

"President Obama promised to begin to slow the rise of the oceans. And to heal the planet. My promise is to help you and your family," he said.

His speech marked the climax of the three-day Republican National Convention and a milestone in his long, often-rocky quest for the presidency. With his opening words, he claimed the honour he was denied when John McCain won the nomination four years ago. This year, he had to fend off a series of Republican challengers, questions about his shifting positions and mutterings about his Mormon religion.

The ultimate prize, the White House, will be determined in a November vote. Polls show Romney and Obama in a dead heat with the economy the biggest issue in the campaign. The United States is struggling with 8.3 per cent unemployment and the slowest economic recovery in decades.

Romney noted excitement over Obama's promises from his campaign four years ago "gave way to disappointment and division."

"You know there's something wrong with the kind of job he's done as president when the best feeling you had was the day you voted for him," he said.

The speech was seen as a national introduction of sorts for the 65-year-old Romney ? an oddity considering his years in the public eye. Yet for all his time as candidate, Massachusetts governor and head of the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, he remains something of an enigma. He is often seen ? unfairly, friends say ? as stiff and distant.

While polls show voters view Romney, a multimillionaire former businessman, as more capable of fixing the economy, they find Obama to be more honest and likable.

The campaign hopes the speech and the convention in general will change perceptions. For three days, speakers have portrayed the candidate as a man of family and faith, savvy and successful in business, saviour of the 2002 Winter Olympics, yet careful with spending. A portion of the convention stage was rebuilt overnight so he would appear surrounded by delegates rather than speaking from a distance, an attempt to soften his image.

Romney offered details of his family life, recounting his youth as a Mormon, the son of parents devoted to one another, then a married man with five rambunctious sons.

He choked up at least twice, including when he recalled how he and wife Ann would awake to find "a pile of kids asleep in our room."

Before Romney's speech, church members warmly presented Romney as a compassionate man who lives his Mormon faith of service. Grant Bennett described Romney's volunteer work shovelling snow and raking leaves for the elderly. A couple, Ted and Pat Oparowski, recalled how Romney befriended their 14-year-old son David as he was dying of cancer. "We will be ever grateful to Mitt for his love and concern," she said. Romney is the first Mormon nominee of a major U.S. political party.

Republicans also turned to some Hollywood firepower, with Clint Eastwood, the legendary tough guy, taking a turn at the podium. "When somebody does not do the job you've got to let 'em go," he said to a roaring audience.

Romney made a press-the-flesh entrance into the hall, walking slowly down one of the convention hall aisles and shaking hands with dozens of delegates. The hall erupted in cheers when he reached the stage and waved to his cheering, chanting supporters before beginning to speak.

Veering from the speech's focus on domestic affairs, Romney said Obama failed to slow Iran's nuclear threat, abandoned Poland by changing missile defence plans and has "thrown allies like Israel under the bus." He said Obama is "eager to give Russia's President (Vladimir) Putin the flexibility he desires after the election."

"Under my administration, our friends will see more loyalty and Mr. Putin will see a little less flexibility and more backbone," he said.

Romney's speech was the traditional convention finale, and thousands of red, white and blue balloons were released when he completed his remarks.

Cheering him on were the thousands of Republican delegates who overwhelmingly approved his nomination in a rollcall vote Tuesday. The party has rallied behind Romney despite longstanding concerns about his shifting political positions and doubts about whether he was a true conservative. Romney's religion also unsettled some evangelicals who do not see Mormonism as a true Christian faith.

But the Republican desire to evict Obama from the White House overwhelms any trepidation about Romney. Moreover, the party was thrilled when Romney picked congressman Paul Ryan, the architect of a plan to slash government spending, as his vice-presidential running mate. Ryan delivered a rousing acceptance speech Wednesday.

The two-month campaign to come includes other big moments ? principally a series of one-on-one debates with Obama. More than $500 million has been spent on campaign television commercials so far. Romney has raised more than Obama.

Democrats looked to use Ryan's speech to fundraising advantage, highlighting factual errors. In a letter sent to potential donors, Obama campaign manager Jim Messina said the Ryan speech "represents a huge bet by the Romney campaign ? they've decided that facts, truth and reality will not be a brake on their campaign message."

The president himself was staying out of the spotlight Thursday. But in an interview with Time magazine released Thursday, Obama said he was hopeful for a more productive second term if re-elected, because "the American people will have made a decision. And, hopefully, that will impact how Republicans think about these problems."

Tweetbot for Mac beta is here. Sort of.

Tweetbot for Mac alpha expires, Tweetbot for Mac beta replaces it. Sort of.

The Tweetbot for Mac alpha is set to expire today. Tapbots has released a beta to replace it, but it comes with a huge, Twitter-policy forced, caveat: You can't add any previously un-added Twitter accounts to it. Developer Paul Haddad explains why on the Tapbots blog:

You can grab the Tweetbot for Mac Beta here. It?s important to realize that with this build you can?t add or reauthorize any accounts. If you delete an account or de-authorize an existing account you will not be able to add it again until the final version comes out.

If you try to add a new account or launch the app with no accounts created you are going to end up right here on this page.

So you can replace the Tweetbot for Mac alpha with the Tweetbot for Mac beta, but you can't add any accounts to it you haven't added already, or replace any you remove in the future (until the final version is released in the Mac App Store). The reason for all this hooha is, of course, and the reason Tapbots had to remove the alpha download previously, Twitter's new, developer-hostile API 1.1 rules which greatly restrict the amount of user tokens any 3rd party app can receive. Ever.

That also means if you tried Tweetbot for Mac alpha, and didn't like it, you should got to Twitter.com and revoke access to it, and any other Twitter app you're no longer using, so the developers can re-use those tokens for future users.

You can grab the new Tweetbot for Mac beta via the link below.

Lovely Offers Photo-Based Apartment Search Results for Quickly Identifying an Awesome New PadCraigslist's apartment search still sucks, but thankfully there are third-party developers out there making it better (even if Craigslist doesn't like it). Previously mentioned Lovely is dedicated to making the apartment finding process easier, and this weekend they built a new search tool to help you find a great place with photo-based search results.

All you need to do is choose a city and a neighborhood to get started. From there you can narrow down your options by choosing the number of bedrooms you want in your apartment and a price range. As you make your selections, Lovely will provide you with a grid of photos depicting the various apartments available to you. From there you can click on anything appealing for more information and view the entire listing if you choose. U.S. second-quarter growth revised up, Fed still seen in play

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. economy fared slightly better than initially thought in the second quarter, but the pace of growth remained too slow to shut the door on further monetary easing from the Federal Reserve.

Gross domestic product expanded at a 1.7 percent annual rate, the Commerce Department said on Wednesday as stronger export growth offset a pull-back in restocking by businesses wary of sluggish domestic demand.

That was up from the government's initial estimate of 1.5 percent growth released last month and in line with economists' expectations. The economy grew at a 2.0 percent pace in the January-March period.

The report also showed that after-tax corporate profits unexpectedly rose at a 1.1 percent rate after sinking 8.6 percent in the first quarter.

While the composition of economic activity was fairly favorable, growth remains well below the 2-2.5 percent rate required every quarter to hold the unemployment rate steady, which could compel policymakers at the U.S. central bank to offer additional stimulus at their September 12-13 meeting.

"It shows slightly better government spending and consumer spending but overall the data suggest the economy stays in slow growth mode and is not likely to change," said Peter Cardillo, chief market economist at Rockwell Global Capital in New York. "This certainly strengthens the hands of the Fed to aid the economy."

U.S. stock index futures were little changed on the data, while Treasury debt prices held steady. The dollar held its gains versus the euro and yen.

Speculation the Fed would loosen policy further had been dampened by a pick-up in job growth and a rebound in retail sales in July, but other data on business spending and inflation supported more action.

Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke could offer more clarity on the near-term outlook for monetary policy when he gives a speech at the Kansas City Fed's high-profile gathering in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, at the end of the week.

The jobless rate rose to 8.3 percent in July from 8.2 percent the prior month. The weak economy could be a stumbling block to President Barack Obama's quest for a second-term in office in November.

EXPORTS UP, INVENTORIES RETREAT

First-quarter economic growth was revised up to show strong export growth, despite slowing global demand. Import growth was the smallest in a year. Trade contributed 0.32 percentage point to GDP growth instead of subtracting a third of a percentage point, as previously reported.

That helped to offset the drag from inventories. Business inventories increased $49.9 billion instead of $66.3 billion and subtracted 0.23 percentage point from GDP growth in the April-June period. However, the careful management of stocks can be a boost to the economy in the third quarter.

Excluding inventories, GDP rose at a 2.0 percent rate rather than 1.2 percent. In the first quarter, final sales of goods and services produced in the United States increased at a 2.4 percent pace.

There were also upward revisions to growth in consumer spending, which was bumped up to a 1.7 percent pace from the previously reported 1.5 percent. That was a step-down from the 2.4 percent pace recorded in the first quarter.

Investment in the construction of nonresidential structures was stronger than previously reported. But growth in business investment in equipment and software was lowered to a 4.7 percent pace, the slowest since the third quarter of 2009, from 7.2 percent previously.

Spending by businesses on equipment and software has slowed sharply from a peak of 18.3 percent in the third quarter of last year.

That appears to have intensified early this quarter, with a measure of business spending plans falling sharply in July. The pullback likely reflects worries of deep government spending cuts and higher taxes scheduled to kick in at the start of 2013, as well as troubles from the debt crisis in Europe.

Growth in spending on homebuilding was cut to an 8.9 percent rate from 9.7 percent. The decline in government spending was not as deep as previously reported, with defense outlays falling at a 0.1 percent rate instead of 0.4 percent.

Though consumer spending was revised up, inflation pressures remained muted.

A price index for personal spending rose at an unrevised 0.7 percent, the slowest pace since the second quarter of 2010. It rose 2.5 percent in the first quarter.

A core measure that strips out food and energy costs advanced at an unrevised 1.8 percent pace, slowing down from 2.2 percent in the prior quarter.

woodenness bluing: Self Improvement & Memory Training: Ways to ...

ByAnthony O Kamson

Confidence - what is it and how do we attain it?

"I see myself falling flat on my face and then I do". Is a common statement by those who have come to believe that they 'lack confidence'

What you think will happen. If you think you're a failure, you will fail. Confident people think themselves successful and they find success, even though their confidence is most of the time an act. They literally run a kind of internal home movie where they are doing well.

So, before something nerve-wracking happens run through a positive internal 'home movie' of yourself in the situation that you are in. If you're going for a job interview, imagine just how well you'll do and tell yourself you're going to succeed. Even if you don't get the job, you'll naturally do better than if you had imagined the worst.

"I typically feel so nervous inside that I sabotage myself as though stage-fright". What are sometimes called 'butterflies' are useful. They in fact remind us to give our very best performance. However, they can also make us so physically nervous that we fail. The answer is simple; by faking it, you can often end up feeling confident quite naturally. This is what people do who appear confident do on a daily basis.

So just before that important task or that big date, relax, then stand tall, hold your head up, relax your shoulders and stand with your weight evenly balanced over each foot smile to raise your spirits and go for it!

"However good I feel, I often look nervous to other people". If you act as though you lack confidence, other people will react to that. Often badly. Use the 'SET' plan, smile, eye contact, touch. All which pick up on the three elements confident people typically demonstrate.

1. Smile and you'll seem relaxed.
2. Hold eye contact and you'll seem sure of yourself.
3. Touch with a firm handshake and you'll seem in control.

"I sometimes feel unsure when I'm doing something new". This statement sounds really negative. Isn't it bad to feel unsure? But actually, this is a positive strategy in some new circumstances. It's no good feeling falsely sure of yourself in all new things. If you were too confident you may not see a potential danger.

With anything new, feeling unconfident is your mind's way of alerting you to your lack of experience or a potential danger. So this isn't a negative thought pattern. But you may have wrongly viewed it as negative. And your reaction to the new situation was wrong.

So with anything new a speech, an interview, any new skill, practice ahead of time is what is needed. By rehearsing you will raise your performance and in turn raise your confidence. Through hypnosis you rehearse different situations as if they were real and you do this within you own mind. This speeds up the learning process in gaining more confidence.

The Crime Writers' Chronicle: Our Weirdest Jobs!

When mystery-world creators delve into their past, astounding things wriggle up from the gardens of memory! I invited some of our crime colleagues to share their adventures.

Feel free to add your own in the comments section.

LARRY LIGHT: One summer in college, I worked in a chewing gum factory. My job was to manually lift cowpie-like hunks of semi-solid gum from a cart and put it into a hopper. Then it was split into long lines of gum so others manually cut it into plugs of the stuff for wrapping. I stank of sugar the entire summer. This was not a blessed state!

ALAFAIR BURKE: Between being a law professor, writing a book a year (ish), and hopefully being a dog walker again soon enough, I probably didn't need another job, but I went and found one anyway. One Saturday in June I spent a day as Guest Gelato Scooper for Mario Batali's Gelotto cart! Why would I want to scoop gelato, you ask? I frequently write at New York's Otto Pizzeria. I even have scenes from the Ellie Hatcher novels set there, starring Dennis the ( real ) bar manager. With the NEVER TELL book tour about to start, I knew I'd be away from New York for much of the summer and homesick. Spending a day in Washington Square Park, making people happy with gelato, seemed like a nice city memory!

KATE GALLISON: In high school I was baby-sitting for two kids when Grandma emerged from her bedroom and demanded that I lace up her corset.

JAMES SCOTT BELL: Being in charge of the fake food as a stagehand in a New York theater production of a Shaw play. It was my first paying theatrical gig since arriving in the city to become an actor. Even though I was backstage, I felt like had my foot in the door. The play had a big dinner scene, and after the curtain came down it was my job to rearrange all the fake food for the next night's performance. I felt a little like that guy who cleans up after the elephants at the circus. When asked why he didn't quit, he said, "What? And give up show business?"

J.T. ELLISON: My most unusual job was as a vet tech. You don't want to know what goes on behind the scenes at the vet! I lasted three days!

SHEILA YORK: When I was a sophomore in high school I was hired, along with some other girls, to pretend to be mannequins in a store window. We modelled fall fashions in August in Tennessee in a west-facing window without moving, with only one fan blowing on us from the narrow door into the store. (It could explain why I am to this day very unenthusiastic about shopping!)

CHRIS GRABENSTEIN: My first job ever! Selling sponges door to door. We were supposed to say that a portion of the proceeds went to help mentally handicapped children. The guy with the speech impediment was the top seller! I quit after two days!

KAYE BARLEY: After a divorce in my 20's, I was working as a secretary in Downtown Atlanta and not making much money. I decided I needed a part time job. A brand new Hilton Hotel had recently opened ? quite the place! Nikolai's Roof, The Casablanca Lounge, designer shops ? all quite upscale! With an international flair. I marched in, filled out a job application and was hired to work as a hostess in the Cafe de la Paix. My uniform looked like something out of the original Heidi movie ? plaid pinafore, ruffled petticoat under a very short skirt. (and this was a French restaurant ? what was with the plaid? Horrible!) One evening, when the gal who was supposed to take care of the "take out" window didn't show, I was put in her place. I want to tell you ? the things some guys traveling on business have the nerve to say to a young twenty-something-year-old waitress are beyond the pale! I'm going to blame it on the drinks in the Casablanca Lounge! I didn't last through the evening! I have no idea who continued selling pastries through that take out window that evening, but it wasn't me! Not only was it very weird, it was very short!

CAMILLE MINICHINO: One of my first (signings) was at a local market. The manager, whom I knew, had always wanted to open a bookstore! Stuck with a deli/market, she was determined to at least host a book party, and it was very successful. She had coffee from a small shop next door, made cookies, stencilled guns on a bedsheet the color of my book cover and used it to cover the meat cases!

ANNETTE MEYERS: In the late 50's I was teaching high school English in New Jersey and living in the city. I had a boyfriend who worked for a car rental agency, ferrying cars out to La Guardia for the rental booth there and picking up others and driving them back into the city. Sometimes they were short of help, and they'd call on me and I filled in. I didn't know Queens and I was used to driving a VW. I just followed one of the workers out to the airport the first time in a big car, and then went back and forth all that summer. I stopped seeing the guy by the end of the summer!!

SUNNY FRAZIER: As a confidential secretary with an undercover narcotics unit. They stuck me out in a double-wide trailer in a nectarine orchard with 10 alpha males! No real supervision as we were so far away from headquarters. Every day was full of hijinks and I had to sometimes treat the men like they were kindergarteners. They were proud of me and used to say, "Only one member on the team is a military vet and college graduate ? and that's our secretary!" I spent eleven years with them, the longest any woman has ever lasted! It gave me lots of great material for my Christy Bristol Astrology mystery novels. I don't ever have to come up with plots ? I lived them!

DENNIS PALUMBO: Trying to break into show business as a writer, way back in my early 20's. While I was writing spec TV scripts, I earned extra money selling jokes to stand-up comics. I would hang around the Comedy Store on Sunset Boulevard, pitching jokes to stand-ups after the acts were finished. Tough gig, let me tell you! One time I was trying to sell some one-liners to an older Vegas comic, and he asked me to meet him in his gym's steam room. So there I was, surrounded by old guys in towels, all sweating our brains out, and I'm trying to read jokes to him from a sheet of paper. Meanwhile, the steam is making the ink run on the paper? Next time, I'm on the road with Gabe Kaplan, at that time the star of Welcome Back, Kotter, and I'm writing jokes for his act. Our deal was, I got paid for every joke that got a laugh. So, we're in the New York City Playboy Club lounge, at 4 A.M. and he's just done a set, which included some of my new jokes. So we sit in the back, arguing about each joke in terms of whether it got a laugh or a chuckle. If it got a laugh, he paid me. If a chuckle, no. Our debate lasted half an hour, ending with us canvassing the few patrons sober enough to speak coherently, asking if they thought a particular joke was funny! Soon afterwards, I was employed as a writer, then screenwriter, and didn't have to peddle jokes to comics anymore. Now long retired from show biz, I'm a licensed psychotherapist, and mystery author! Still, I have fond memories of that early time!!! DOUG LYLE: If ever I had any doubts about going to college, and I never did, those would have evaporated on a very hot July day in Huntsville, Alabama. I had a summer job at a lumber yard, a good way to make some money and get in shape for the next football season. Loading dry wall all day will do that. But on this day, a very strong black guy I worked with called Mr. Golden and I were dispatched in a flat bed truck to unload roofing tiles from a box car over at the rail yards. Forty pallets on those old asphalt tiles. No problem! We had a fork lift on the truck and it was a simple matter of lifting the pallets, removing them from the box car, and settling them in the long bed of the truck. Piece of cake! Not so fast? The box car had a sliding door that ran on metal rails at its top and bottom. The bottom rail prevented the fork lift from entering the car - it was slung too low. So we had to do it by hand. Each pallet had ten squares, each square three bundles, and each bundle weighed 67 pounds! So we had 1200 bundles to off load. Did I mention it was July? The outside temperature was 95, the humidity the same, and inside the box car it was 140 if it was anything! We took turns being in the car. Lifting a bundle and tossing it out the door, where the other guy would catch it and stack it on an empty pallet. Took us five hours! No food, no water, we were way out on the far reaches of the rail yard. Took two days to recover from this little adventure. Never again!!!!

LOIS WINSTON: My weirdest job wasn't at all weird back in the day, but by today's standards??? If I said I once had a job spec'ing type, I doubt many people now would know what I was talking about. Typesetters have gone the way of the dinosaurs. Everything from magazine ads to book text to the words on a bag of Cheetos is done in no time with a few computer keystrokes. However, back before computers, figuring out how big to make the font to fit within a text block was tedious work that involved (shudder) math. And being a totally right-brained person, math and I didn't exactly get along. Make an error, and it cost in both dollars and time, not a good thing when each job was on a tight budget and an even tighter deadline. Great for inducing panic attacks, though getting fired was a huge relief!

THELMA STRAW: Ever wonder what nuns wear under those voluminous robes? For sure, not Victoria's Secret! One fall, while enrolled in one of the colleges in Oxford, England, I ran out of money to pay my room and board at the hostel run by the Anglican nuns there. They graciously offered me a trade - doing their laundry for lodging. In an open shed in the middle of their huge cabbage garden, daily I stirred over an open fire a huge cauldron filled with a weird assortment of bloomers, female tops, long black cotton stockings and some sort of Elizabethan petticoats (from a Mother Goose fairy tale) in a steamy brew of the nuns' homemade soap. Not Ivory! I then hung them on a line over the rows of cabbages, often wondering if I got the garments really clean! The icing on the cake was that at mealtime the ladies served their boarders cabbage ? thrice per diem! Cabbage mush, cabbage cereal, cabbage bread, cabbage pudding! Nowadays I rarely meet a cabbage dish I'll eat!

P.S. Please share with us your own weird or odd experiences in our comment section!

Build A More Confident Future With These Personal Finance Tips ...

Everyone knows how jumbled personal finances can get when they are let go. If this is your situation, it is imperative that you learn the proper steps to get or keep your resources under control. This article will provide you with shrewd hints on making your personal finances organized and astounding.

It is only a bargain if you buy what you actually need, rather than loading up on something simply because it is on sale. If you end up throwing out food because it has gone bad, you are essentially throwing out money and negating the bargains. Do not go overboard, then you will be able to enjoy a sale.

Tired of failing to qualify for a credit line or other major purchase? Take a few minutes to go over your most recent credit reports. In many cases, there is simply outdated information or even errors on your reports that are sinking your scores. Contest anything that is incorrect in writing and ask the consumer credit agency to remove the mistakes.

Make sure you have a checking account that works for you. Many people use checking accounts they?ve used for years even if the monthly charges are expensive. Look for other offers and compare different financial products. Open new accounts with different banks.

Use tax planning and take advantage of it so you can get your personal finances back into shape. Take a look at the investment options that your employer provides to their workers. Before paying taxes, open a savings account designed to cover medical expenses. Find out if your employer will match your 401K contributions. You should always utilize your earned income wisely.

Most debt collectors will negotiate the amount owed on an account. They may have purchased your debt for a low price. If you pay only a small percentage of what you owe, they are still making a profit. Keep this in mind when you work with collection agencies to resolve your debt.

Eat like a local would to save money in a foreign country. Any restaurants in a tourist area, as well as the hotel, will be vastly overpriced so eat at the same place as the locals. From local restaurants, you will find more ethnic food for less money.

Go over any insurance policies you have. Your insurance rates might be too high! There may be other insurance companies offering lower rates, or you may be paying for unnecessary insurance benefits. Take a closer look at your policy to see if you could be saving money.

Make sure you dedicate a particular day each month to pay bills. Although you aren?t going to spend the whole day paying your balls, you should set aside this day so that you don?t miss it. Put this day on your calendar and get to your bills on that day regularly. If you forget, this can cause a lot of future problems.

Try to set up an automatic pay plan to pay credit card balances with a debit card every month. This setup will stop you from forgetting about the necessary payments.

Speak with people you?re close to about how you?re doing financially. This will help you feel a little better about not being able to afford social activities with them. If you do not tell them, they may think that they have done something wrong to cause you to avoid doing social activities with them. Involve your friends and let them know problems you are facing in your life.

Don?t let your personal finances get to you, clear your head, and realize it is time for you to tackle the issues. The article has provided you with the information you need to get on the right track, so apply this information to your personal finances and you will make a difference.

Be aware of food and water safety this hurricane season

GREAT BAY, Sint Maarten (DCOMM) ? During the hurricane season, residents must be prepared for different things.? The Office of Disaster Management in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Health would like to bring forth the following tips regarding food and water safety before and after a hurricane strike.

Make sure you have appliance thermometers in your refrigerator and freezer.? An appliance thermometer will indicate the temperature in the refrigerator and freezer in case of a power outage and help determine if the food is safe.? Make sure the freezer is at or below 0 degrees F and the refrigerator is at or below 40 degrees F.

Freeze containers of water for ice to help keep food cold in the freezer, refrigerator, or coolers after the power is out.? If your normal water supply is contaminated or unavailable, the melting ice will supply drinking water.

Freeze refrigerated items such as leftovers, milk, and fresh meat and poultry that you may not need immediately.? This helps keep them at a safe temperature longer.? Group food together in the freezer.? This helps the food stay cold longer.? Have coolers on hand to keep refrigerator food cold if the power will be out for more than four hours.? Purchase or make ice cubes and store in the freezer for use in the refrigerator or in a cooler.? Freeze gel packs ahead of time for use in coolers.

Plan ahead and know where dry ice and block ice can be purchased.? Store food on shelves that will be safely out of the way of contaminated water in case of flooding.? Make sure to have a supply of bottled water stored where it will be as safe as possible from flooding.

When the power goes out keep the refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible to maintain the cold temperature.? The refrigerator will keep food cold for about four hours if it is unopened.? A full freezer will keep the temperature for approximately 48 hours (24 hours if it is half full) if the door remains closed.

If you plan to eat refrigerated or frozen meat, poultry, fish or eggs while they are still at safe temperatures, it?s important that the food is thoroughly cooked to the proper temperature to assure that any food borne bacteria that may be present is destroyed.

Wash fruits and vegetables with water from a safe source before eating.? For infants, if possible, use prepared, canned baby formula that requires no added water.? When using concentrated or powered formulas, prepare with bottled water if the local water source is potentially contaminated.?

The hurricane season runs through November 30.

Tourism Sector and Business Community Reminded It Only Takes One

GREAT BAY, Sint Maarten (DCOMM) ? Disaster Coordinator Winston Salomon is advising the country?s mainstay, the tourism sector and business community overall, to review hurricane preparation plans since we are now in the most active period of the 2012 hurricane season which runs from August 15 and through October 15.

The tourism sector, business community and residents are also advised to pay keen attention to weather reports with special focus on the Eastern Atlantic Ocean where tropical weather systems that form off the African Coast (Cape Verde Islands) can become a serious threat to the Eastern Caribbean island chain.?

This year?s Atlantic hurricane season got off to a busy start, with eight named storms to date, and the U.S. National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Climate Prediction Centre which released an updated outlook, still indicates a 50 per cent chance of a near-normal season, but increases the chance of an above-normal season to 35 per cent.

At this stage of the hurricane season, tourism-oriented businesses should be prepared.? The prevention of the loss of life of our visitors and staff along with protecting property from damage is the responsibility of every business owner.

The engine of the economy is every single business operation on the island.? Each one plays a very important role in the island?s tourism-oriented economy.
As the Office of Disaster Management annual theme says, ?It only takes one!? Now is the time for business community in its entirety as well as residents to review what preparations are in place, and not when a storm is about to hit.

The remaining names of potential storms for the 2012 season are: Isaac, Joyce, Kirk, Leslie, Michael, Nadine, Oscar, Patty, Rafael, Sandy, Tony, Valerie and William.
The hurricane season runs through November 30.

Well what a day! Heavy periods of rain on and off all day (much needed) and at 5.29 we had a strong earth tremour! 5.1 on Richter scale apparently ? epicentre was 4 miles east of Stoney Ground, Anguilla, enough to get me to my feet on the second rumble. Our apartment building shook and a number of people felt it serious enough to go outside. Our coffee table was dancing on the floor!

All quiet now, let?s hope it stays that way!

Coastal residents advised to have plans in place for storm surge flooding
?
GREAT BAY, Sint Maarten (DCOMM) ? Coastal residents are advised to have plans in place for possible storm surge in the event of a passing hurricane along the south coast of the country.

According to the Office of Disaster Management, these plans should be in place since before the hurricane season which started on June 1.

The season so far has seen four storms form with the last one being Debby that caused severe flooding and discomfort in parts of the U.S. state of Florida a few days ago.

Property damages that can be expected from hurricanes and coastal flooding have been increasing year by year, and in many places the threat to life is increasing as well, according to the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

Most coastal communities are vulnerable to one or more different kinds of flooding and related hazards: frequent flooding from storm surge and winds; and storm-caused erosion of bluffs and beaches.

Coastal areas of Sint Maarten are: Beacon Hill, Cupecoy, vicinity of the Princess Juliana International Airport, Simpson Bay, Pelican, Cay Bay, Belair & Little Bay, Philipsburg, Pointe Blanche, Red Pond, Oyster Pond and Guana Bay.

In the event of a passing hurricane, homeowners should secure their possessions to upper levels of the structure.? If you decide not to stay in your home, you should make the necessary arrangements before the passing of a hurricane on where you would stay to ride out the passing of the storm system.? One should not wait until the last moment to evacuate their home.? Rising storm waters can also flood coastal roads.

The most important link in the chain of preparation and response for coastal flooding is you.? Take the necessary measures to prepare your family and home, according to the Office of Disaster Management.

Here is a check list if you have to leave your home before a hurricane strike due to high storm surge that is expected: turn off water and gas; have a radio and spare batteries; a first aid kit; flashlight; spare bedding; bottled water and tinned food; house keys; prescription medicine; cash and credit cards; mobile phone and spare clothing.
