(AP) ? Aaron Bright came off the bench to spark Stanford to an NIT title.

The sophomore point guard had 15 points and six assists in Thursday's 75-51 rout of Minnesota to earn most outstanding player honors, energizing the Cardinal just as the coaches had hoped when they took him out of the starting lineup in mid-February.

"I give him all the credit, because it takes a player buying into something like that before it works, and he bought into his role," coach Johnny Dawkins said. "When he comes in, he brings us energy. ... I think it's hard for teams to prepare for him because he's not out there right away. When he comes in, it gives us a big lift, and it gives our kids confidence in what they can do."

The victory brought Stanford's season full circle. Back in November, the Cardinal let a late lead slip away in the final of the NIT Season Tip-Off at Madison Square Garden against a Syracuse team that would earn a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament.

"We were here before in the preseason and we fell short," Dawkins said. "And so we talked about this experience as how much have we grown: You know, to show we have grown, we'd have to win this tournament.

"And our kids, I think they rallied around that."

The Golden Gophers aren't exactly the Orange, but when Stanford took the lead this time, the Cardinal never looked back.

Stanford forced two turnovers to open the second half to take a 10-point lead and stayed up by double figures the rest of the way. The Golden Gophers turned it over 22 times.

The third-seeded Cardinal (26-11) won their second NIT title, the first coming in 1991. Another young Stanford guard, freshman Chasson Randle, also scored 15 points.

The final minutes turned into a celebration of 3-pointers and fast-break layups for the Cardinal, players on the bench jumping up to cheer on nearly every possession.

Both teams got off to a strong start, but then Stanford turned up the defensive pressure, and when the Golden Gophers (23-15) had good looks, they couldn't make them. Sixth-seeded Minnesota missed 16 of its last 19 field goals in the first half.

"When you're missing shots like that, you get a little frustrated or you pick up a foul ... you're a little discouraged," coach Tubby Smith said.

The Cardinal scored 12 straight points to go ahead 29-21 with 4 1/2 minutes left before the break. Bright had six points, including a four-point play, and two assists during the run, and Stanford drew three charges.

In front of a sparse crowd at the Garden, the atmosphere on the court had some sizzle. Minnesota's Elliott Eliason and Stanford's Dwight Powell had to be separated after getting tangled up on a held ball late in the first half, and the two exchanged words again in the second. Powell was later called for a contact technical foul when the Gophers' Rodney Williams hit the floor face first after being whistled for fouling the Cardinal forward.

Williams stayed on the court for several minutes before walking off under his own power and returned to the game soon thereafter.

It was the fourth foul on Williams, who at that juncture had scored 12 of Minnesota's 30 points. Williams finished with 12 to lead the Gophers.

Powell hit both of his free throws, and in a sign of how the game was going for Minnesota, Andre Hollins, a 92.2-percent foul shooter, made only one of two, and Stanford led 47-31 with less than 12 minutes left. Hollins, a freshman, had five turnovers and zero assists.

"That's just unacceptable for a point guard," he said.

The injury-riddled Golden Gophers had made a spirited run to the NIT title game. But they hit just three of their 13 3-point attempts and allowed the Cardinal to shoot 57.1 percent in the second half.

Longtime coach Dick Davey went out with a win. A former head coach at Santa Clara, Davey is retiring as Stanford's associate head coach.

"I've been telling everybody it's great for next year, too," Bright said. "It's great for our seniors to go out like that and hopefully it carries into the offseason for us and we'll just continue to work hard. We know what it takes to win the tournament now. We won five in a row, and I think we are going to use this experience for next year and making a run at the March Madness."

Everything You Wanted To Know About Using RESPs And Student ...

by Jordan Brown on March 28, 2012

If you are enrolled in a university or college and need additional funds to meet tuition and other school-related expenses, there are different options to look into. Many colleges and universities offer financial aid, and students can apply for scholarships and grants. These may not cover all school-related costs, but students have other options to finance their studies, including RESPs and government and non-government student loans.

The Canadian government encourages family, friends and parents to save money for education through the Canada Education Savings Program and Registered Education Savings Plans. RESPs represent education savings accounts that are tax-sheltered and help cover education-related expenses after finishing high school. Registered Education Savings Plans are registered by the federal government, and savings in them grow tax-free. This is a special savings plan for education after high school and works like a savings account. Another way to start saving for education is through the Canada Savings Bond, offered by the Canadian government. Parents qualify if their child/children were born after 31 December, 2003, and they get baby bonus or family allowance (the National Child Benefit Supplement). Parents receive $500, plus $100 a year until their children are 15 of age. Parents are not required to put their own money in a Registered Education Savings Plan to qualify.

Parents can use the bond to pay part-time and full-time studies in a trade school, a CEGEP, an apprenticeship program, university or college. The Canada Education Savings Grant and Canada Learning Bond are offered under the Canada Education Savings Program as a way to encourage friends, family members and, parents to save for college. The federal government deposits up to $7,200 into RESPs to be used when a beneficiary enrolls at a university or another postsecondary institution. Parents have to meet certain eligibility criteria (e.g. the income of the primary caregiver or parent is taken into account.

Government and private loans for students are another option for persons who need additional sources of funding to pay for college. The Government of Canada works in cooperation with the territories and provinces to offer financial assistance. Loans are offered to part-time and full-time students with a demonstrated financial need and are administered as part of the Canada Student Loans Program. Most territories and provinces offer loans under the program, except Quebec, the Northwest Territories, and Nunavut. They have developed their own financial assistance programs and receive payments from the federal government.

The federal government and several financial institutions have developed risk-sharing arrangements. Under these agreements financial institutions assume responsibility for the risks of defaulted loans. On its part, the federal government has agreed to make a fixed payment. Students can apply for non-government student loans in addition to government financial assistance. The major difference between non-government and government student loans is that students are not required to pay interest on government loans while in college.

This web site has tons of useful information.

Fresh, Personalized Mobile Apps Keep You Healthy and Fit ...

There is a growing fondness on mobile health and fitness applications in the market today. From staying in shape to looking after the whole family?s eating habits, mobile developers are spurred to come up with solutions that address growing demands across the fitness and healthcare industry. ?Especially for people on the go, these mobile apps are heaven-sent.

The emerging market of mobile nutrition could actually improve and individual?s health according to a recent study. Here are some apps that might be just what you need to stay healthy.

Shopwell 2.0

The healthy eating app?recently launched version 2.0?of their iPhone app,?enabling shoppers to quickly build a health-conscious grocery lists. This personalized feature asks for age, gender, dietary goals and food preferences. From this set of information, the app will deliver a hearty line-up of recommended food and healthier alternatives.

Brian Witlin, CEO of ShopWell shares the overall picture of nutrition and how the app fits well in this scene:

?Nutrition is not one size fits all, but most guides or healthy eating resources treat it as though it is. In reality each person has specific goals and restrictions, and most shoppers have to balance the needs and preferences of a whole family of individuals. It?s incredibly difficult. ShopWell has the largest, most accurate, dietitian-screened compilation of nutrition facts panels in the U.S. It?s like having the food label reading expertise of a Registered Dietitian with you while you shop.?

Shopwell provides comprehensive nutrition information and product scores depending on your unique needs. The app does the work on reading nutrition labels and recommends what?s good and what doesn?t suit you.

GAIN

GAIN parades ??cloud in your pocket? technology and in an increasingly competitive market, this one?s going to be tough to beat. ?Aside from its sophisticated platform, the digital personal trainer app for iPhone users is also introducing an all-new improved version. ?GAIN 3.0 revolutionizes and personalizes workouts for individuals via the ?GAIN Plan?. This new app also features audio coaching, high definition exercise images and trainer cues.

Founder and CEO of GAIN, Nick Gammell shares his excitement over the enhancements made and how strongly they fare against the industry?s competition:

?There?s a clear market shift taking place as fitness companies move from a dated ?tracking? approach to a more helpful ?workout guidance? system. GAIN has always been a quant-based company at heart, and is better positioned to lead this market than any other platform. GAIN is miles ahead of the competition due to its data-driven infrastructure, customization algorithms and open platform approach.?

This is a free app in iTunes App Store. The paid version is an expansion pack, offering a broader and more extensive fitness coaching platform. It also has yoga workouts, sports performance training and rehabilitative programs.

NCSF

The National Council on Strength and Fitness (NCSF) has joined the mobile health and fitness bandwagon with the launch of the?Personal Trainer Calculators app. The app aims to optimize the personal training experience and gauge the client?s next step, workout demands and physical performance. Included in the list of calculations is caloric expenditure, target body weight, daily energy nutrient intake, body fat, body mass index (BMI) and more.

NCSF Director of Education, Sean Grieve sees convenience and functionality tied in one app, saying, ?personal training is a results-oriented business and the ease of accessibility and functionality of these applications will make programming and tracking much more efficient and effective.?

The app is available for Apple and Android users.

Jybe

Another intuitive app, Jybe launches personalized recommendation app for effortless health decisions. Based from the likes and dislikes of friends and your personal choice and fitness goals, this program will do the searching and decision-making on where and ?what to eat.

Arnab Bhattacharjee, co-founder and CEO briefly explains how the app works differently and efficiently:

?A recommendation app should create conversations with users and should not be a one-way street for communication. It must let you search, browse and filter data but it should also help the user understand why recommendations are given to increase a user?s trust. The Jybe app combines all of these things ? search, browse, recommend, explain, and action and puts it into a single experience.?

Kiip

To keep the users faithful to their fitness goals and increase engagement, Kiip gives away rewards for fitness milestones. It has already branched out from being just a pure gaming app to a fitness program that can be accessed using mobile devices.

Venturebeat offers an example of how ?moments? may be rewarded. ??For instance, if you log your run for the day in MapMyRun, you can get a reward from PepsiCo?s Propel Zero brand. The same will be true for achievement moments in apps such as Nexercise, LoloFit, and Gym-Pact. Pepsi will mail a Propel zero package to you.?

With hundreds of apps developed devoted to weight loss and fitness goals, there is clearly a market for mobile in the avenues of nutrition, medicine and fitness. ?What?s your favorite personal health app for the iPhone?

Ripping electrons from their cores: Physicists mix two lasers to create light at many frequencies

ScienceDaily (Mar. 28, 2012) ? A team of physicists at UC Santa Barbara has seen the light, and it comes in many different colors. By aiming high- and low-frequency laser beams at a semiconductor, the researchers caused electrons to be ripped from their cores, accelerated, and then smashed back into the cores they left behind. This recollision produced multiple frequencies of light simultaneously.

Their findings appear in the current issue of the science journal Nature.

"This is a very remarkable phenomenon. I have never seen anything like this before," said Mark Sherwin, whose research group made the groundbreaking discovery. Sherwin is a professor of physics at UCSB and a co-author of the paper. He is also director of the campus's Institute for Terahertz Science and Technology.

When the high-frequency optical laser beam hits the semiconductor material -- in this case, gallium arsenide nanostructures -- it creates an electron-hole pair called an exciton. The electron is negatively charged, and the hole is positively charged, and the two are bound together by their mutual attraction. "The high-frequency laser creates electrons and holes," Sherwin explained. "The very strong, low-frequency free electron laser beam rips the electron away from the hole and accelerates it. As the low-frequency field oscillates, it causes the electron to come careening back to the hole." The electron has excess energy because it has been accelerated, and when it slams back into the hole, the recombined electron-hole pair emits photons at new frequencies.

"It's fairly routine to mix the lasers and get one or two new frequencies, Sherwin continued. "But to see all these different new frequencies, up to 11 in our experiment, is the exciting phenomenon. Each frequency corresponds to a different color."

In terms of real-world applications, the electron-hole recollision phenomenon has the potential to significantly increase the speed of data transfer and communication processes. One possible application involves multiplexing -- the ability to send data down multiple channels -- and another is high-speed modulation.

"Think of your cable Internet," explained Ben Zaks, a UCSB doctoral student in physics and the paper's lead author. "The cable is a bundle of fiber optics, and you're sending a beam with a wavelength that's approximately 1.5 microns down the line. But within that beam there are a lot of frequencies separated by small gaps, like a fine-toothed comb. Information going one way moves on one frequency, and information going another way uses another frequency. You want to have a lot of frequencies available, but not too far from one another."

The electron-hole recollision phenomenon does just that -- it creates light at new frequencies, with optimal separation between them.

The researchers utilize a free electron laser -- a building-size machine in UCSB's Broida Hall -- to produce the electron-hole recollisions, which they note is not practical for real-world applications. Theoretically, however, a transistor could be used in place of the free electron laser to produce the strong terahertz fields. "The transistor would then modulate the near infrared beam," Zaks continued. "Our data indicates that we are modulating the near infrared laser at twice the terahertz frequency. This is where we could really see this working to increase the speed of optical modulation, which is how you get information down a cable line."

The electron-hole recollision phenomenon creates many new avenues for research and exploration, Sherwin noted. "It is an interesting time because there are a lot of people who can participate in doing this kind of research," he said. "We have a unique tool -- a free electron laser -- which gives us a big advantage for exploring the properties of fundamental materials. We just put it in front of our laser beams and measure the colors of light going out. Now that we've seen this phenomenon, we can start doing the hard work of putting the pieces together on a chip."

In discussing the research team's discovery, Sherwin cited Michael Polanyi, the Hungarian scientist and science philosopher. "He talked about growing points in science, and I'm hoping this is going to be one of those, where a lot of people can use it as a foundation for going off in a lot of different directions," he said. "I want to continue working on it, but I'd like to see a lot of other people join in."

Also contributing to the research is the paper's second author, R.B. Liu of The Chinese University in Hong Kong. "This is an excellent example of the value of communicating with scientists from all over the globe," said Sherwin. "If we had never met, this research would not have happened."

Bipartisan Bill Prohibiting Private Possession of Big Cats introduced ...

To: ENVIRONMENTAL AND NATIONAL EDITORS

WASHINGTON, Feb. 29, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ ? Today, bipartisan legislation was introduced in the House of Representatives that would prohibit breeding and private possession of captive big cats. The ?Big Cats and Public Safety Protection Act,? introduced by Rep. Buck McKeon (R-CA) and Rep. Loretta Sanchez, (D-CA), would ensure that lions, tigers and other dangerous big cats?which are kept as pets in the U.S. in alarming numbers?do not threaten public safety, diminish global big cat conservation efforts, or end up living in deplorable conditions where they can be subject to mistreatment and cruelty. Sen. John Kerry (D-MA) is expected to introduce a companion bill in the Senate within the next few weeks.

?No matter how many times people try to do it, wildcats such as lions, tigers, panthers and cheetahs are impossible to domesticate for personal possession and require much higher living standards compared to a domestic house cat,? said Rep. McKeon. ?When accidents happen and these wild cats are released into our neighborhoods, it causes panic, puts a strain on our local public safety responders and is extremely dangerous. This bill is a step forward in protecting the public and ensuring that wildcats reside in proper living conditions.?

It is estimated that there are 10,000 to 20,000 big cats currently held in private ownership in the U.S., although the exact number remains a mystery. In the past 21 years, U.S. incidents involving captive big cats?tigers, lions, cougars, leopards, jaguars, cheetahs and lion/tiger hybrids?have resulted in the deaths of 21 humans, 246 maulings, 254 escapes, 143 big cats deaths and 131 confiscations.

?It?s a little hard to believe that there?s a crazy patchwork of regulations governing people who try to keep wild cats as pets. I know it sounds like something you just read about when there?s a tragic news story, but it?s all too real for first responders who respond to a 911 call and are surprised to come face to face with a Bengal tiger,? said Sen. Kerry. ?This bill will ensure that these endangered creatures are kept in secure, professional facilities like wildlife sanctuaries rather than in small cages in someone?s backyard or apartment building.?

The debate over private ownership of big cats garnered national attention last October when the owner of a backyard menagerie in Zanesville, Ohio, opened the cages of his tigers, leopards, lions, wolves, bears and monkeys before committing suicide. Local police, who were neither trained nor properly equipped to deal with a situation of that magnitude, were forced to shoot and kill nearly 50 animals?38 of them big cats?before they could enter populated areas.

?The events in Ohio last year showed the tragedy that can occur when exotic animals are privately owned by individuals, with little to no oversight,? said Rep. Loretta Sanchez. ?Wild animals are dangerous and we clearly need better laws limiting their ownership. Exotic species should be regulated to high quality facilities with the ability to properly care for them.?

The bill would make it illegal to possess any big cat except at adequate facilities like accredited zoos and wildlife sanctuaries where they can properly cared for and sheltered, and would only allow breeding at accredited zoos, along with some research or educational institutions. Violators of the law could have their animals confiscated along with any vehicles or equipment used to aid in their activity, and could face stiff penalties including fines up to $20,000 and up to five years in jail.

In addition, any persons who currently possess big cats would be required to register those animals with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) under the new bill. Presently, very little information is kept by the US Department of Agriculture, state agencies or local authorities regarding how many big cats are being kept in private hands, under what conditions and where.

The proposed legislation is being supported by a number of animal welfare and wildlife conservation groups including the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), World Wildlife Fund (WWF), Born Free USA, Big Cat Rescue, the Ian Somerhalder Foundation (ISF), Animal Welfare Institute (AWI), the ROAR Foundation and the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS).

?We applaud Reps. McKeon and Loretta Sanchez [and Sen. Kerry] for their foresight in bringing this important issue before Congress,? said Paul Todd, Campaigns Manager, IFAW. ?Big cats are not meant to be pets, and this legislation will help to protect the public from danger while protecting these beautiful creatures from improper and inhumane care.?

In 2003, Congress passed the ?Captive Wildlife Safety Act,? which prohibits interstate trade of big cats, but the ban only applies to big cats for use as pets. Licensed exhibitors, which make up the majority of private owners of big cats, are exempt, even though many USDA licensees are just pet owners. Currently, two states have absolutely no regulations or permits regarding private ownership of exotic animals including big cats. Seven other states have little to no regulations of private ownership of exotic animals including big cats. Another 14 states allow big cat possession only with a state permit, and 27 states and the District of Columbia have enacted full bans on private ownership of big cats, though all of those exempt Federally-licensed exhibitors.
