Pony Vaccines, Same Dosage? | TBN Ranch

Louie, 1/2 Shetland Pony / 1/2 Mini

I?ve had horses all of my adult life and I haven?t questioned myself for a very long time concerning which vaccines to administer and when they are needed? but, I never had a pony before. I?m on new territory, and being it?s Fall and time to vaccinate, I turned to my very good friend Google for advice. My question was if a pony gets the same vaccine dosage as a full size horse. After much research from the many reputable sites I trust, the answer to my question was unanimous ? YES, a pony does indeed get the same dosage as a full size horse.

So here we go, another battle with my little Louie. He?s been on the ranch for 3 months and it took a month just to be able to catch him. He?s a handful for virtually anything that requires handling. I have earned his trust slowly and can now spray him with fly spray, brush him, and my biggest accomplishment, the big bad paste wormer. But I must say, sticking him with a needle is definitely not something I?m looking forward to!

The farrier also has a few complaints I?m sure. He?s been here twice to trim Louie?s hooves?the first time was unsuccessful, the second time a week later took an hour. But it?s done, nothing bad happened and hopefully next time my little devil Louie will be more accepting.? Louie is 12 years old and obviously hasn?t been handled much. But with a lot of PATIENCE, I know he will acquire all the manners expected of him. It just takes the one thing I have plenty of? time.? Oh, did I mention I?m still unemployed? lol

Obama blocks Chinese firm's Oregon wind farm projects

WASHINGTON ? President Obama, in a rare move, blocked the acquisition by a Chinese-owned company of four wind farm projects next to a military base in Oregon.

Obama cited in a presidential order issued Friday "credible evidence" that the company "might take action that threatens to impair the national security of the United States."

The decision comes against the backdrop of a presidential race in which Obama and Republican opponent Mitt Romney have traded jabs over who would be more effective in answering the challenges the ascendant Chinese economy poses. The U.S. and China filed international trade complaints against each other this month, boosting tensions over economic issues.

The presidential order, the first of its kind since 1990, instructs Ralls Corp., whose owners are Chinese, to divest itself of four wind farm projects on Oregon land that it acquired this year. Ralls is affiliated with the Sany Group, a Chinese maker of wind turbines.

The wind farm sites are all in or near restricted airspace at the Naval Weapons Systems Training Facility in Boardman, Ore., according to a statement by the Treasury Department, which chairs the interagency Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States that oversees such transactions. The committee initially recommended against allowing the transaction in July. But only the president can halt an acquisition.

The military flies highly sensitive drones at the Boardman facility, according to the Associated Press.

"The administration will continue to ensure that the United States remains the most attractive place for businesses to locate, invest, grow, and create jobs. The president's decision is specific to this transaction and is not a precedent with regard to any other foreign direct investment from China or any other country," the Treasury Department statement said.

A Treasury Department spokeswoman declined to elaborate on the national security threats Ralls Corp. project posed.

Tim Xia, Ralls' lawyer, said that the project did not constitute a national security threat and that the company had filed a lawsuit against the committee. "The president's order is without justification, as scores of other wind turbines already operate in the area where Ralls' project is located," Xia said in a statement. "The selective and arbitrary singling out of the Ralls project drives our effort to seek redress in U.S. courts."

The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C., alleges that the U.S. foreign investment review panel exceeded its authority by rejecting the project without due process. Ralls was formed to identify markets and develop wind-energy projects for Sany Electric's turbine generator business. The four Oregon projects were once owned by Terna Energy.

The White House has been particularly eager to protect U.S. interests in renewable energy, an area in which China has made strong moves to garner a growing share of a globally competitive business. In May, the Obama administration slapped huge tariffs on U.S. imports of Chinese-made solar panels.

Obama was mandated by law to make a decision by Sept. 28, after the committee delivered its conclusions about the Ralls project. His rejection of the project is the first time since 1990 that a president has scuttled a foreign investment deal. Given the committee's qualms about the project, Obama's decision was not surprising, although some foreign investment experts questioned the tone and prominence of the announcement.

For years the foreign investment review panel operated in obscurity, but in 2006 it came under scrutiny after the proposed purchase of commercial operations of six U.S. ports by Dubai Ports World sparked an uproar in Congress. As a result, Dubai Ports World officials said later that year they would sell the operations to an American owner.

In 2005, officials of a Chinese state-owned oil company withdrew their proposal to acquire Unocal after that bid triggered a furor in Congress. That had a chilling effect on Chinese acquisitions in the U.S., but so far this year, China investments in the U.S. have surged to record levels.

Yahoo CEO Mayer demands product launches within six months

Yahoo CEO Mayer

As we?ve noted previously, Yahoo (YHOO) CEO Marissa Mayer is not messing around when it comes to getting her new company up to speed with her former employer,?Google (GOOG). And now, unnamed sources have told?Business Insider?that Mayer has delivered a new ultimatum for employees working on product pitches: Figure out a way to get it out the door in six months or don?t bother pitching it at all. What?s more, Yahoo will no longer consider investing in any project ?if it doesn?t have a realistic shot of reaching 100 million users or generate $100 million toward the company?s top line.?

Event combines fashion/home improvement to help those with HIV ...

Posted on: 3:03 pm, September 24, 2012, by Laura Langemo, updated on: 09:18pm, September 24, 2012

WAUWATOSA ? An upcoming event at Elena?s House will combine fashion and home improvement to help those with HIV/AIDs.

Each day is a blessing to Michael Brown, as he was diagnosed with HIV 30 years ago. Brown continues to have a positive outlook, although it?s been a rough road. He has suffered two strokes due to AIDS, which has affected his mobility and speech.

?I was scared because I thought I was going to die. I`m still here and thank God about that,? Brown said.

Brown has found refuge at Elena?s House, ? a transitional and end of life home for people with HIV and AIDS.

?This is a very joyful place. Amidst all of the sadness and amidst the suffering there is great hope and joy here,? Elena?s House founder Mary Ellen Huwiler said.

In order to keep Elena?s House open and help with expenses, Callen Construction began putting on a rather unique fundraiser. It?s called Refashion for Life, and features a fashion show combining the latest in home improvement products and clothing.

?Imagine some of the most beautiful dresses and clothes for women, with a beautiful model walking down the runway with a beautiful piece of tile,? Callen Construction owner Tom Callen said.

Over the past four years, Refashion for Life has raised $90,000 for Elena?s House.

?Refashion for Life has really kept us going so that I don`t wake up every night trying to figure out how we are going to pay our bills. It`s been a wonderful gift to us,? Huwiler said.

Refashion for Life is planned for Wednesday, September 26th at Callen Construction in Muskego. Tickets are $40 and the event begins at 5:30 p.m.

"The Perks of Being a Wallflower" Review: Been There, Done That - Unless You're 15

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Much of the hype and press coverage on "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" will focus on Emma Watson, who has her first sizable post-"Harry Potter" role here as a slightly wild high school senior. (She was in last year's "My Week with Marilyn," but if you blinked, you likely missed her.)

The young British star is talented and engaging enough and manages a passable American accent in this appealing coming-of-age comedy, but the real show stealer in "Perks" is Ezra Miller. He's a sharp-faced, 19-year old actor who has already impressed in "City Island," "Another Happy Day" and "We Need To Talk About Kevin." Playing a disaffected teen who is gay and secretly involved with a high school football star, he radiates the same fierce intelligence and dark humor that one saw in a young Richard Dreyfuss or Dustin Hoffman, whom he vaguely resembles.

Neither of them is the movie's main character. "Perks'" protagonist is Charlie (Logan Lerman), a shy but intelligent youth who, at the film's start, is beginning ninth grade after having suffered some sort of breakdown over the summer. He's feeling emotionally fragile, and it doesn't help that his parents (Dylan McDermott and Kate Walsh) keep watching him closely for signs of a relapse.

As he makes friends with step siblings Patrick (Miller) and Sam (Watson), who are part of an older crowd, i.e. seniors, with whom Charlie starts hanging, our young hero is exposed to sex, drugs, mix tapes and midnight showings of "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." How he navigates all of this, along with repeated troubling flashbacks involving a beloved aunt who died (Melanie Lynskey), makes for a compelling and believable story.

Director and screenwriter Stephen Chbosky (TV's "Jericho") based "Perks" on his own popular 1999 novel of the same name. The movie succeeds best in sympathetically portraying its young characters, giving them far more depth than the stereotypes seen in most teen movies.

These are smart, though at times troubled, kids. They have the usual anxieties about sex, college, and what comes next. Charlie is depicted as having an extra dose of anxiety because of something that happened to him in his past. It's this last point that, when revealed, sends the movie into the realm of clich?, relying as it does on a plot device that is an overused storytelling crutch.

"Perks" is for adolescents looking for a fairly honest film about themselves and what it's really like to be 15 or 16 and trying to find your way toward adulthood. Adults will find it watchable and engrossing until, well, about two-thirds of the way through when one's patience with teen angst wears thin. Been there, done that - no need to relive it.

Life Is Too Short To Drive A Boring Car - Business Review Australia

NEW YORK, Sept. 18, 2012 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Business partners Steven Landau, and Alan Goodman became owners of?The Classic Car Gallery?in Southport, Connecticut, as a way to express of their love for exciting cars. Mr. Landau who had previously been an oil trader on the Mercantile Exchange traded in his lucrative day job in pursuit of his automotive passion.

Upon entering the shop one of the first things I noticed was the Gallery's slogan, "Life is too short to drive a boring car." The criterion Mr. Landau uses for determining what qualifies as an exciting car mainly revolves around what cars he thinks are fun to drive, or have a good character about them. An additional qualification is that the car, whatever its make or model, must represent one of the finest available examples on the market. The Gallery isn't in the business of buying a beater, and flipping it for a profit. Instead, Mr. Landau looks for cars that are in excellent condition. He finds that often owners of fine cars are simply unwilling to continue paying for costly maintenance issues, and as a result are willing to sell cars that are fine examples once minor repairs are done on at the shop.

Mr. Landau's personal collection of cars includes a Mercedes 190SL, a Noble M400 producing upwards of 400hp, a 1970's Maserati Gibli, and a BMW?E46 M5. Given his fine personal collection, it's no wonder that the shop is filled to the brim with superb examples of exotic and classic cars from all eras. Currently on sale is a 1956 Jaguar XK140 featuring all the racing accessories a vintage racecar collector could ever want. Also on sale is a 1970 Saab 96 factory produced Rally Car that is best described by Mr. Landau who writes, "With a bare metal race car interior, full roll cage, racing seats with 5 point harnesses, Halda Tripmaster [odometer], [racing] ?gauges, dead pedal for the navigator, dual fire existquishers?this car screams race car!" Also on sale is a meticulously resorted 1940 Packard 110 Club Coupe, restored by one of the preeminent Packard experts around.

Currently, the Gallery has over 40 cars on sale, ranging in make from Jaguar, to Chevrolet, to Rolls Royce. But according to Mr. Landau, the Gallery most prefers Porsches. Mr. Landau thinks that Porsches represent a wonderful balance between exhilarating performance and unrivaled mechanical reliability. It is because of the wonderful engineering of German cars, that Mr. Landau finds them to be a good investment. At one time, Mr. Landau owned a heavily modified 1980's Porsche 911 that was prone to shoot three foot long flames out of the tailpipe as it smoked flashier exotic cars of the period. But despite the cars modifications, the Porsche operated just as it should.

The beauty of the Classic Car Gallery extends beyond the wonderful assortment of fine cars. It is the attitude that Mr. Landau and Mr. Goodman adopt that makes the Gallery a special place. They see themselves as gearhead ambassadors, and as such, welcome car enthusiasts into their shop whether of not they're in the market for a collector car. They'll go over each car's features and quirks, open up the hood of an exotic Superperformence Daytona Coupe, or discuss the misleading nature of televised auctions. Though Mr. Landau is running a business, he treats visitors as though the Gallery is something more, a haven for car lovers, a resource for anyone interested in finding an exciting car, an antidote to boring cars.

The Classic Car Gallery is located at 3266 Post Road, Southport, Connecticut.

(AP) ? Michael Madsen was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of drunken driving on the Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu, and was expected to spend the night in a hospital, authorities said.

It was the second arrest in six months for the "Reservoir Dogs" actor.

Madsen was pulled over for driving erratically in a red Pontiac GTO shortly before 3 p.m. Los Angeles County Sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore said.

In a preliminary test Madsen had a blood alcohol level of .21, more than twice the legal limit of .08, Whitmore said.

While he was being booked, Madsen complained of a medical problem and was taken to a hospital, where doctors said he should spend the night. Deputies then cited and released him.

Whitmore said privacy laws prevent him from describing the medical problem.

A late-night phone message left for Madsen's attorney Perry Wander was not immediately returned.

Madsen is best known for playing killers in the Quentin Tarantino films "Reservoir Dogs" and "Kill Bill" parts 1 and 2, and also appeared in the family-friendly whale pic "Free Willy."

In March, Madsen was arrested at his Malibu home after what detectives said was a drunken fight with his teenage son, but prosecutors declined to file charges because of a lack of evidence.

Is Verizon readying a HTC Desire 4G LTE?

Android Central

Verizon is quite fond of its DROID branding, so the screenshot here obtained by Engadget leaves us a little curious. The image is reportedly of a Verizon internal device management system and clearly bears reference to a HTC Desire 4G LTE. Not to be confused with the DROID Incredible 4G LTE, listed alongside it, this appears to be a completely different device.

While there is every chance that the name may not be final, the lack of DROID branding potentially indicates a low to mid-range device. With HTC having just launched the Desire X during IFA 2012, perhaps Big Red could be receiving their own LTE variant? Whatever the case may be, for the time being we'll file this one under the big old rumor pile until we see more.

Yerba Mate and Malbec.

Yerba mate (left), and malbec (right)

Yerba mate photo by Ramzi Haidar/AFP/Getty Images. Wine photo by Ed Yourdon.

In 1964, Argentine writer Jorge Luis Borges wrote the sonnet ?To Wine,? which celebrated the wondrous qualities of the drink. ?Wine,? the poem proclaimed,

flows red along the great length of generations
like the river of time and on the arduous road
bestows on us its music, its fire, and its lions.

Americans know what he was talking about?we?re crazy about Argentine wines. Malbec has become a standard feature of tasting menus and cocktail parties in the United States, as has, to a lesser degree, the white wine torront?s. Both varietals appeal to our palates without doing too much damage to our wallets.

Lesser known in America is yerba mate, which, along with wine, slakes thirsts, alters minds, and orchestrates the rituals of everyday Argentine life. Mate (which rhymes with ?latte? and is sometimes spelled ?mat??) is a tea-like caffeinated infusion that outsells coffee and tea combined in Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, and southern Brazil. It?s brewed and served in virtually every home in Argentina. And it was important to Borges, too?in an interview at the end of his life, he reflected, ?I drank a lot of mate when I was young. Drinking mate was, for me, the way to feel like a creole of old.?

Borges wasn?t the only fan of both wine and yerba mate?in fact, it?s hard to imagine life in Argentina without both. But just as the simple dish of spaghetti and red sauce actually contains the history of European, Asian, and American interactions (the tomato was a New World plant, introduced into Europe centuries?perhaps millennia?after Italians began eating pasta), the two daily beverages of Argentina shed light on a complicated past. Even the names of the beverages hint at their backstory: The word mate comes from a native language spoken in the Andes; wine (or vino) has Indo-European roots. The story of how mate and wine became the reigning beverages of Argentina is a story of geography, immigration, and taste. ?

The tale begins in the earliest days of Europe?s colonization of the Americas. Starting with Christopher Columbus, wine grapes accompanied Europeans to the New World because of their role in the Roman Catholic sacrament of the Eucharist?without wine, you couldn?t have Mass. The plant didn?t fare well in the hot and humid Caribbean, but in the dry slopes of the Andes, warmed by ample sunlight and watered by the frigid runoff from snow-capped mountains, vitis vinifera flourished.

The first wine grapes planted in Argentina?humble Spanish whites like the moscatel and the hybrid torront?s?were brought by a priest, Juan Cedr?n, in the 1550s. The task of winemaking fell to inexperienced colonists, and their product was largely eschewed in favor of stronger spirits by indigenous locals. But the wine sufficed as fodder for Holy Communion.

Meanwhile, conquistadors were also eager to discover new foods and drugs in the New World. (Can we even imagine not knowing about chocolate, vanilla, tobacco, potatoes, or chilies? All were New World plants.) When 16th-century Spanish explorers worked their way westward across the continent, they found that indigenous groups like the Guaran? steeped or chewed the leaves of a local tree, Ilex paraguariensis, for a jolt of energy. The locals called the stimulant ca?a, which means plant in the Guaran? language; the Spanish followed their lead and called it plant, too: hierba, or the older Spanish form, yerba.

The Europeans quickly got into the habit. To properly drink mate, a gourd (called a mati in the Quechua language) is packed to the brim with smoke-dried leaves and stems, filled with warm (not boiling) water, and then passed from one person to another. Each participant drains the gourd through the same perforated straw, which the Spanish dubbed a bombilla. The colonists enjoyed the ritual and the beverage so much that they began trading the leaves throughout the Southern Hemisphere. (The Paran? River basin lacked the spectacular mineral wealth of Mexico and Peru, which meant that the colonists had little else to trade besides mate.)
