Newby Realty - Manufactured Home Sales: Long Distance Grand ...

We live in a transient society today. It is not uncommon for family members to move away from one another. Whatever the reason, grandparents find they are separated from their children and grandchildren more and more. This does not mean they are separated in heart! Grandparenting ?over the miles? is affordable, delightful and probably the most satisfying way to continue a relationship with your loved ones!

For starters, engaging your children in this process is essential. They can keep you up on the stages your grandchildren are going through, what their interests are, what gifts are appropriate, and what the rules of the house are. When the child is old enough to interact, start engaging the child directly. For example, talk on the telephone, send pictures, cards or letters. This is the foundation for starting a long-term, solid relationship with your grandchild, no matter what their age. It's up to the grandparent to start the ball rolling!

Let?s expand on this long distance communication. Mailing items to your young grandchildren is a learning experience. Before they read, they can recognize their name on the envelope and will love the feeling of importance implied by receiving mail. When mailing letters with pictures, one can tell a story about the picture. (Remember, you are also a family historian and can relay stories that will inform the child of their roots: family ancestry, background, professions, locations, heritage and family tree.) Send a return addressed envelope and encourage them to draw a picture for you and/or write a letter. Send books, explain why you like the book or mention you know why they would like it. Even recording the story in your own voice while they can follow along in the book would be wonderful!

When you are talking to grandchildren on the phone, make notes about what they are saying as they mention their favorites and interests: colors, games, books, TV shows, friends, sports, movies, songs, artists, pet?s names, doll?s name, etc. In your next conversation, you can ask about the specific things they spoke about.

Children respond positively to the special attention and care because this communicates your interest and love. This allows you to know them better and better yet, it deepens your bond with each other. As much as it is healthy and fulfilling for the child, it is equally healthy and fulfilling for the grandparent!

Organizational Change Management: An Essential Component to ...

Maturity doesn?t always come up as a significant factor in Organizational Change Management (OCM) discussion circles, but in my experience, you ignore it at your peril! I became aware of this issue while setting up Project Management Offices (PMOs) and doing enterprise Project Portfolio Management (PPM) tool implementations for two of the firms I worked for in the late 1990s. Ever since, I have made sure I took maturity into account on every major change initiative for which I?ve been responsible. Unlike assessing sponsorship and employing tactics to deal with cultural resistance, determining maturity?s impact on a change initiative is more art than science. Even after the scientific assessment work is done, it still takes experience and expertise to judge how much a lack of maturity will slow the change process, and thus just how much change you can introduce and how quickly it is likely to be absorbed. Too much change too fast causes severe organizational heartburn, and at worst can stop the change in its tracks almost as fast as lack of sponsorship.

Let me clarify that I?m not referring to an Organizational Change Management Maturity Model, which would rank the organization?s capabilities of managing significant changes on a recurring basis?typically on a 1 to 5 scale. Even if your firm is at the highest level of such a model, indicating that it has mastered the change management process, the maturity of the business function or operation being changed may still be low.

Some Examples
In PM Solutions? line of business, we are often hired to help improve an organization?s project management maturity. Before we start building and deploying any of the components, we first assess the organization?s current level of maturity on a 1-to-5 scale, using our proprietary model. The composite assessment score tells us two things: (1) what the organization is lacking in terms of methodology, process, governance, tools and so forth, and (2) how fast it is likely to absorb and apply the new material we will be introducing. Our Project Management Maturity Model (PMMM) isn?t advertised as an OCM tool per se, but it certainly provides a significant contribution to it. Level 1 organizations will clearly need more time to adopt and institutionalize our solution than one that is already at level 3 or 4.

Here are some real-life examples of how maturity impacted the speed of implementation?or in some cases stopped the project before it even got off the ground:

A major hardware retailer wanted to implement Earned Value (EV), which they believed would help them get a better grip on their projects in terms of time and cost overruns, and give them the ability to make course corrections sooner and faster. While EV can certainly do that, I was initially concerned with whether or not the company had the foundational components in place.? EV is a more advanced concept for most companies, especially in the private sector. I soon learned that their basic project scheduling practices?including a WBS, resource and cost-loaded tasks, baselining, consistent application of actuals, rescheduling, and formal scope change control?were very immature, which meant they had no concept of schedule or cost variance, never mind more sophisticated EV measures such as Schedule or Cost Performance Indices (SPI/CPI). While they had solid sponsorship and a ?burning platform? for change, their current project management maturity level was too low for us in good conscience to recommend moving forward with an EV implementation. I suggested to them that they?d gain significant improvements from putting some of the foundational components in place, such as a project management methodology and some key metrics, run with that for a few months, and then see how they were doing. They might still want EV, but I strongly urged them to consider it as a release 2 or release 3 component.

As the PMO Manager for a point-of-sale network provider in the early 2000s. I came aboard knowing up front that their project management maturity was low, and that portfolio management was nonexistent. I started out by introducing a basic methodology then, towards the end of my first year,? tried to implement some relatively straightforward portfolio management governance. I knew I had to keep it simple out of the gate?in spite of the fact that the lack of it was causing all sorts of resource capacity issues and gnashing of teeth between the resource managers and project sponsors?because it had never been tried before. I proposed that a portfolio steering committee of key executives be formed which would meet once a month to review the project portfolio; a simple spreadsheet to track the portfolio; and a scorecard to rank the projects by. The division president gave it his blessing; the steering committee was formed; and I assembled a proposed project scorecard which was largely based on strategic importance as priority #1, net present value (NPV) as priority #2, and with legal/regulatory compliance trumping both. The sole agenda of our first steering committee meeting was to review and approve the scorecard.

That first meeting ended as a fiasco, since every executive department head had his/her own vision of how to rank projects. Everyone wanted to satisfy their own personal agendas, because that was their level of maturity. By the second monthly meeting, one of the technology vice presidents proposed that we modify the scorecard to simply say that all proposed new projects be brought to the table with the desired finish dates and enough detail to be able to make reasonable educated guesses as to duration and resource requirements, and that the next lower level of management?largely the resource directors and managers?make up the steering committee going forward. Unless the affected resource directors and managers voiced any concerns about being able to meet the date on a proposed new project, the motion would pass to add the new project to the portfolio. If any resource conflicts arose, the division president would be the final arbiter and decision-maker. Everyone nodded approval at the new approach, and gave it a try. The revised scorecard was a hit. I was still concerned that the company was working on projects that were not aligned with the corporate strategy, and wasn?t always working on the most important things first, but at least we had cleared a simple first hurdle. Things like NPV and strategic alignment would have to wait for another day. In a land that from a project and portfolio management perspective had been dry as the Sahara, I realized that even one small oasis with water was a major victory.

The Tools Mirage. Many firms make the plunge into enterprise PPM tools without considering their PM maturity level or the organizational change impact such tools usually have. So many times I?ve seen these tools rolled out, only to find that:

  • the majority of the project managers didn?t understand project scheduling fundamentals (and had to be hastily trained after the fact)
  • the organization had never done timekeeping before, but was expected to use it for capturing actuals on projects (timekeeping is also a potential cultural resistance issue, especially in high-tech outfits that hire primarily younger engineering types, who don?t like ?big brother watching them?)
  • there was no governance in place to be able to effectively take advantage of the tool?s portfolio management capabilities (no project scorecard, no project list, no steering committee, no portfolio management process, etc.)
  • the EV functionality was activated right away and top management started beating up all of the project managers whose projects lit up on the executive dashboards with yellow or red SPI and CPI indicators.

In almost every case, the sponsors who made the decision to buy the tool did so believing that their project management problems could largely be solved by a technical solution?a ?silver bullet??only to realize afterwards that things got worse instead of better, blame the tool, throw it out in favor of another vendor?s tool, and repeat the same mistakes all over again!

I did a PPM tool implementation for a small federal government agency several years ago that was in exactly this position. My implementation was to be their third and final attempt. Fortunately I had learned about OCM practices by then. I employed several tactics to help make the implementation a success, including a PM maturity assessment, an assessment of the history of the two prior failed implementations, a sponsorship assessment, an OCM Chart, a communications plan with a marketing plan built in, and a training plan that included educating everyone affected by the tool at every level. At first they didn?t see the value in what I was doing (?this isn?t project planning?we don?t want to pay you for this!?), but it became apparent to them as the project moved forward the value that OCM added.

The PM maturity assessment showed me that we needed to deploy the tool?s functionality in four releases: (1) basic scheduling and timekeeping; (2) advanced scheduling and reporting; (3) portfolio management; and lastly (4) EV?which was what prompted them to buy the tool in the first place. I then had to convince their executives that my four-step release plan?with EV in release 4 instead of release 1?was the best way to go. They initially weren?t thrilled, but conceded that they couldn?t afford a third failure so agreed to proceed as planned. Had we not taken the maturity of the organization into account, we would have surely failed as the two preceding vendors had; three strikes and you?re out!

On my next and last post of this OCM series, I?ll cover how the capacity of the organization affects the adoption rate of organizational change in much the same manner as maturity does.

Facebook posts loss in first earnings report

Kevork Djansezian / Getty Images

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the company is focused on mobile, social ads and the network's development platform.

By Martin Wolk, NBC News

Updated at 7 p.m. ET: Facebook reported a loss Thursday in its first quarterly report as a public company, but?revenues surged 32 percent over year-ago levels?to nearly $1.2 billion.

The results were roughly in line with analyst expectations but Facebook shares (FB), already under heavy pressure, fell sharply after the earnings release.

In a conference call with analysts that was broadcast over the Internet, Facebook executives led by CEO Mark Zuckerberg said they were working hard to build new "social" advertising that will allow the company to monetize the growing percentage of its users who come to the service through mobile devices.

"Mobile is a huge opportunity for Facebook," Zuckerberg said.

"Our goal is to connect everyone in the world," he said, adding that most of the world's people soon will have a mobile device, so it makes sense to improve the Facebook mobile experience.

Chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg said the company has been experimenting with "sponsored stories" that allow advertisers like Wal-Mart to pay to ensure that more users see a certain piece of content in their Newsfeed. She said the strategy allows Facebook to avoid the problem faced by many media companies who have a hard time monetizing the small screen of mobile devices.

"Sponsored stories in Newsfeed are the cornerstone of our mobile advertising effort," she said.

Zuckerberg said Facebook's opportunity to build out a platform for other developers is larger than generally understood.

He sketched out a future in which a new car buyer would sign into the car's computer and immediately have access to contacts, music, restaurant listings and the recommendation of friends.

The social networking giant posted a net loss of?$157 million, or 8 cents a share, largely due to expenses related to its May 17 public offering. Excluding the special charges, Facebook said it earned 12 cents a share, in line with Wall Street expectations.

Excluding share-based compensation and related payroll tax expenses, Facebook said operating income for the second quarter was?$515 million, compared with?$477 million?for the second quarter of 2011.

In the earnings release, Zuckerberg said the company was focused on?"mobile, platform and social ads."

BTIG analyst Richard Greenfield said investors were concerned that Facebook did not offer any guidance for its earnings going forward.

"Growth is clearly slowing on both the user and revenue basis, and without guidance to make people believe it's growing, you have a large part of investor fear," he said.

Facebook shares, which have yet to regain their $38 offering price,?fell $2.50 to $26.84?before earnings were released and were down?another 10 percent in after-hours trading. Even before the release, Facebook shares were hit by the?poor earnings performance?of gaming company Zynga, which accounts for more than 10 percent of Facebook's revenue.

Michael Matousek, a senior trader at U.S. Global Investors Inc, said facebook beat expectations, "but the Street was looking for more."

"The big question with the stock is how it will monetize its billion or so users," he said. "A lot of people think they can't convert those users to money."

Facebook said it had 955 million monthly active users, up from 901 million users at the end of March. The company generated 84 percent of its revenue, or $992 million, from advertising.

The company had about 4,000 employees as of June 30, up from 3,200 at year-end, a number that was described as small relative to Facebook's enormous user base.

Facebook went public in a massively hyped IPO that was widely seen as a failure, both because of technical glitches and because the price set by underwriters failed to hold, leaving behind legions of new, unhappy investors.?

The 11-year-old?Mars Odyssey probe performed a six-second thruster burn Tuesday (July 24) that nudged it six minutes ahead in its orbit, NASA officials said. The manuever placed Odyssey in a prime spot to receive signals from the Curiosity rover when it streaks toward the Martian surface, and to relay news of the rover's landing back to Earth.

"Information we are receiving indicates the maneuver has completed as planned," Mars Odyssey project manager Gaylon McSmith, of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., said in a statement. "Odyssey has been working at Mars longer than any other spacecraft, so it is appropriate that it has a special role in supporting the newest arrival."

Odyssey's comeback

The move marks something of a comeback for Odyssey, which in early June suffered a malfunction on one of its reaction wheels, instruments that help control the probe's orientation in space. The glitch caused Odyssey to go into a precautionary safe mode on July 11, which in turn affected its orbit.

As a result, officials weren't sure whether Odyssey would be in the right spot during the 1-ton Curiosity rover's touchdown. Without the corrective engine burn, Odyssey would have arrived over Curiosity's landing site ? the enormous Gale Crater ? about two minutes after the rover touched down, officials said.

Curiosity, the centerpiece of NASA's $2.5 billion Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) mission, will investigate whether the Gale area is, or ever was, capable of supporting microbial life.

Its landing is inspiring perhaps more nervousness than most other planetary touchdowns. Because Curiosity is so big, MSL engineers had to devise a new landing method for the rover. They settled on a rocket-powered sky crane, which will lower Curiosity to the Martian surface on cables before flying off and intentionally crash-landing a short distance away. [How Curiosity's Nail-Biting Landing Works (Pictures)]

A communications relay

Odyssey is uniquely capable of relaying the landing news in real time. Two other Mars orbiters, NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter and the European Space Agency's Mars Express, will receive transmissions from Curiosity's spacecraft, but they'll send the communications along to Earth after a delay of several hours, officials said.

And Earth will set below the Martian horizon before Curiosity touches down, meaning the MSL spacecraft won't be able to beam signals home directly.

The upshot of Odyssey's successful maneuver is that the Curiosity team should learn of the landing's outcome by 10:31 p.m. Pacific time Aug. 5 (1:31 a.m. Eastern time Aug. 6).

Odyssey began science operations in February 2002, and it has now worked at Mars longer than any other mission in history. The probe created the first global maps of chemical and mineral distribution on Mars, and its observations led to the discovery of vast amounts of water ice buried under the planet's surface.

The spacecraft has also served as a communications relay station for NASA's Spirit and Opportunity rovers and the Phoenix lander.

GMI Ratings Governance Issue | Weatherford International Ltd. - The ...

Weatherford International Ltd. (WFT) estimated a $100 million settlement over its alleged improper sales and also reported on continuing efforts to fix its income tax reporting problems. While the oilfield services company seems to progress toward resolving some issues, the handwriting has been on the wall that Weatherford?s investors risk lawsuit-related losses.

The risks no longer represent mere probabilities. Regulators including the U.S. Department of Justice and Securities and Exchange Commission have been investigating Weatherford over its alleged improper sales in sanctioned countries. The company decided in September 2007 to stop doing business in Cuba, Iran, Sudan and Syria, according to a filing on March 15.? Weatherford emphasized in a press release Tuesday that the actual loss from the multi-agency investigation, which remains unsettled, could be more or less than $100 million.

The SEC and DOJ are also investigating the circumstances surrounding Weatherford?s financial reporting of its income taxes. The company announced on March 1, 2011? that it had needed to make adjustments of around $500 million for the periods from 2007 to 2010, mostly related to its determination of the tax consequences of amounts exchanged between subsidiaries. The adjustment for each year was expected to range between $100 million and $150 million. Weatherford said Tuesday that it continues to analyze the adjustment numbers and they could be subject to further revision.

?Weatherford has committed its full resources to address our income tax accounting issues as quickly and as thoroughly as possible,? its chairman and CEO Bernard J. Duroc-Danner said in the Tuesday statement. ?Our entire senior management team and their respective functional departments?tax, accounting, legal and operations?are working together to achieve our goal.?

Separately, the company also filed a material weakness remediation update on Tuesday that described its efforts to improve its tax process. For example, it said it had aligned non-U.S. tax personnel with the regional finance team and created an organizational structure based on tax functional lines such as planning, accounting, compliance and audits. It also hired an unnamed vice president in tax who ?has experience remediating material weaknesses in income taxes at a prior company? and an unnamed assistant vice president in tax audits who has worked in the area for more than 30 years.

As Weatherford attempts to clean up its financial reporting, regulators are also working on other matters related to allegations of improper sales. The DOJ and SEC have undertaken investigations into Weatherford's participation in the United Nations oil-for-food program governing sales of goods and services into Iraq, as well as its compliance with the anti-bribery law known as the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. While Weatherford participated in the oil-for-food program until 2003 ? clearly many years ago ? its CEO Duroc-Danner has presided over the company since 1998.

In part due to such red flags, Weatherford?s financial statements reflected an AGR score of 18 as of March, indicating higher accounting and governance risk than 82% of companies. The score has improved only slightly since December 2010, when it was an 11.

Investors have already filed class action lawsuits. A few days after the abovementioned March 1, 2011 filing, investors alleged in the California Central District Court that Weatherford misled them. Another class action lawsuit against the company hit in New York's Southern District Court this March, alleging defendants knew or recklessly failed to inform investors that Weatherford did not properly restate its financial statements from 2007 to 2010, hastily issued its annual regulatory filing for 2010 to give the impression that it remedied its financial reporting from 2007 to 2010, and failed to properly document an additional $225 million in adjustments for financial statements from 2007 to 2010.

It?s always possible that the company?s managers will succeed in cleaning up their act in the year ahead. But the company is rated ?F? on its corporate governance overall, and investors who buy Weatherford stock do expose themselves to risks down the line.

FACT CHECK: Romney-Bain contacts outlasted exit

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has said he had no active role in Bain Capital, the private equity firm he founded, after he exited in February 1999 to take over Salt Lake City's Winter Olympics bid. But according to Bain associates and others familiar with Romney's actions at the time, he stayed in regular contact with his partners over the following months, tending to his partnership interests and negotiating his separation from the company.

Those familiar with Romney's discussions with his Bain partners said the contacts included several meetings in Boston, the company's home base, but were limited to matters that did not affect the firm's investments or other management decisions. Yet Romney continued to oversee his partnership stakes even as he disengaged from the firm, personally signing or approving a series of corporate and legal documents through the spring of 2001, according to financial reports reviewed by The Associated Press.

The details of Romney's contacts with his Bain partners between his 1999 departure and his separation from the company in mid-2001 could show how involved he was ? either as CEO or passive investor ? in several multimillion-dollar investment deals, bankruptcies and a spate of layoffs and overseas job shifts at Bain-owned companies that reportedly occurred during that span. Romney's role became a campaign issue in recent weeks because corporate records from the time showed his interests in some of those deals ? despite his insistence that he gave up any decision-making authority once he left Bain.

"When partners depart a private equity company and are no longer active, there are various ways that their interests may be affected," said Colin C. Blaydon, director of Dartmouth University's Center for Private Equity and Entrepreneurship. "In some cases it may not be affected at all, but they still own points in the funds and the carried interest that is paid as part of their partnership stake. It's entirely possible to step back from a previous management role, but that all depends on the arrangements they make and the management structure created to replace them."

A clear accounting of Romney's contacts with Bain has been hampered by his presidential campaign's reluctance to discuss the period in detail and complicated by conflicting accounts in some of Romney's comments and financial reports. Both the Romney campaign and Bain have declined to provide documentary materials that could shed light on Romney's role after 1999.

Romney's campaign says that once he agreed to head the Olympics bid, he was no longer "involved in the management of that business or the investment decisions that occurred." Campaign spokeswoman Andrea Saul added that "it took some time to transfer his ownership to the other partners, which is not surprising given the growth and success of the firm."

Romney testified during a 2002 Massachusetts court case that he flew back and forth between Boston and Salt Lake City frequently in the first half of 1999, returning at least four times to attend board meetings of office supply giant Staples Inc., which had named him a director. Romney said nothing about his dealings with Bain during that testimony, which came during a legal challenge to his Massachusetts residency that was aimed at thwarting his campaign for governor.

Several associates now say that Romney made repeated trips between Salt Lake and Boston, where he met at times with his former partners, mostly to discuss his severance from the firm. The Boston Globe reported last week that Romney also met with his Bain partners at a 15th anniversary celebration in Palm Beach, Fla., in early 1999.

"Some were group conversations. Some were one on one," said a legal expert familiar with Romney's discussions with his Bain partners. This person, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss confidential business dealings, said that Romney did not relinquish his Bain ownership after taking the Olympics role but that Romney took care to avoid the day-to-day role of a corporate manager.

This person said that when Romney left, a five-partner management committee was already in place. That account echoed a similar version given by Edward Conard, a former Bain partner who donated $1 million last year to a political committee supporting Romney's presidential run.

"There was a management committee running Bain to transition from Mitt to a new structure," Conard said last week during an interview on MSNBC. At the same time, Conard said, Romney's exit was complicated by the fact that "Mitt's names were on the documents as chief executive and sole owner of the company."

Those documents, filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission, contain dozens of references to Romney and his holdings. An AP analysis of thousands of SEC filings in that three-year period found at least 39 documents in which Romney was listed as sole shareholder, president or director of investment funds that controlled large stakes in Bain-related companies.

Some legal experts said those records show that Romney remained the "controlling person," as some filings described him, in the deals that Bain struck in that span. "From a corporate law point of view, it would not be kosher to hold him out as president when he had no role in the company," said George Washington University law professor Arthur E. Wilmarth Jr.

Other experts cautioned that while federal "beneficial ownership" rules require the listing of partners whose voting stakes exceed 5 percent of an investment in a public company, any partner with voting power in the same investment could also exercise authority. While Romney controlled the management entity running Bain, his partners controlled connected general partnerships that directed the investment funds. As a result, Romney was not the only Bain partner with lines of authority over the investments cited in the SEC filings.

"Anyone who has voting power over the shares could be the owner for reporting purposes," said Brian J. Lane, a partner at the Washington law firm of Gibson Dunn and former director of the SEC's Corporate Finance Division, which oversees corporate filings.

In addition to those SEC reports, other corporate documents obtained by the AP show Romney's personal signature at least 10 times on large stock transactions or ownership statements tied to Bain investment deals at the time. Those documents include Romney's signature on federal stock forms approving the sales of large stakes in circuit board manufacturer DDi Corp. The company went into bankruptcy in 2003.

SEC filings by Bain also showed that Romney's digital signature? a legal version of his personal script ? appeared on at least 18 other stock ownership records between 1999 and 2001. The filings were part of Bain investments in Therma Wave, a heat testing company; Wesley Jessen Visioncare; and Staples Inc.

Romney's defenders argue that such signings reflected his limited role as a Bain partner and investor, but not as the firm's manager. One former senior Bain partner said that once Romney had accepted the Olympics position, he would "make suggestions but not decisions." The former partner added that Romney's extensive partnership stakes required him to respond to ? and at times approve ? a succession of ownership documents stemming from the company's continuing investment deals.

Documents reviewed by the AP also showed that Romney signed several power-of-attorney statements that were used repeatedly during the transition, allowing other senior Bain partners and several lawyers for Bain to represent his interests in the investment deals the company struck between 1999 and 2001.

Blaydon said such moves are common in private equity deals and also could have provided Romney with legal flexibility as he moved to disengage from Bain. "If he wanted to dial in by phone, he could have," Blaydon said. "There's no doubt he could have played a bigger role if he wanted, but if he wanted to have minimal involvement, he had that flexibility."

Other private equity experts questioned whether Romney's continuing financial stakes could be so easily separated from his longtime CEO role. Victor Fleischer, a University of Colorado law professor and private equity expert who urged corporate tax code reforms during congressional testimony last year, said Romney could not simply waive his duties as Bain's CEO and major shareholder.

Many of Bain's investment funds and several of Romney's own managing partnership entities were based in Delaware. Fleischer said the state's corporate code required that the fund manager "perform whatever partnership duties they have with the greatest attention. He was still president, CEO and sole shareholder of some of the management companies for some of these funds, and under Delaware law, owed fiduciary duties to his investors. If you can't fulfill your fiduciary duties as owner, you have to waive your partnerships."

Charles M. Elson, a University of Delaware finance professor and an authority on the state's corporate laws, countered that Delaware law "is flexible enough to give (Bain) leeway in their decision-making. The partnership law is enabling. They could make decisions without him."

Even Romney's explanation of his role at Bain after 1999 appears to have shifted in recent years, as shown in notes that his financial trustee provided in successive presidential candidate financial reports submitted in 2007 and in 2011 to the U.S. Office of Government Ethics. The lawyer administering Romney's finances, R. Bradford Malt, said in 2007 that Romney did not have "any active role with any Bain Capital entity" after 1999. In 2011, that explanation broadened, saying Romney had also "not been involved in the operations of any Bain Capital entity in any way."

Both explanations appear at odds with statements attributed to Romney in a corporate press release from July 1999, five months after he left to take over the Olympic bid. The press release, recently posted on the Daily Kos website, announced the departure that year from Bain by two of Romney's founding partners. The release also stated that Romney remained Bain's CEO while on a "part-time leave of absence" to head the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City.

D'Jamila Salem, a former Boston public relations executive who authored the press release, recalled recently that Bain officials provided the quotes and information about Romney at the time.

Salem was listed on the release as a press contact along with Joshua Bekenstein, a founding Bain partner. Bekenstein also substituted at times for Romney on SEC filings under power of attorney during that period. Bekenstein, still a Bain managing director, was one of several company executives who did not respond to calls from AP for comment.

Southern Morocco: Deaths Increase Due to ... - Morocco World News

By Jamal Saidi

Morocco World News

Casablanca, July 24, 2012

According to the daily Al Massae, there is a significant increase of deaths due to stings of poisonous reptiles in the mountainous area of Imozar, near Agadir in southern Morocco. Four deaths were registered in less than one month as a result of snake bites and scorpion stings. The majority of these cases were found in the village of Imsker.

The clinic of Imsker is the only medical center in the village. It has been closed for nine months since the staff nurse retired. Additionally, the infirmary lacks oxygen and antibodies that enhance resistance to reptile bites.

Many new born babies were deprived of vaccination. Numerous families decided not to vaccinate their babies due to the long distance between the village and Agadir city, as well as the high cost of transportation.

It is worth noting that more than 20 associations that are under the umbrella of Federale Association of Idaoutanane demanded the acceleration of appointing a new nurse in the aforementioned hospital, that it be provided with a medical center that would provide services for the 1500 people living in the surrounding areas of Idaoutanan. They also called upon the minister of health to provide the oxygen to save the lives of many mothers and babies in a place where death due to respiratory failure is increasingly taking place.

Relationships: One woman's search for a BFF | Ink

Rachel Bertsche

Author, ?MWF seeking?BFF?

52 Number of girl dates Rachel Bertsche went on during her yearlong search for a BFF in?2010.

150 Number of meaningful relationships humans can hold in their heads, according to British anthropologist Robin?Dunbar.

20 Number of openings Bertsche had for friends at the start of her search based on Dunbar?s number. Coincidentally, Bertsche says she did add 20 new friends to her?circle.

Is it possible to make lifelong friends as an?adult?

One of my Facebook friends posed that question a few months ago. In response, someone suggested the book ?MWF Seeking BFF: My Yearlong Search for a New Best Friend.? (Random House, $15). I had to check it?out.

The author, Rachel Bertsche, had moved to Chicago for love in 2007 and gotten married in 2009. But her lifelong besties were back home in New?York.

?I found myself with no one to call on Sunday morning to see where we were having brunch, nowhere to stop by after work to watch ?Project Runway,??? she writes in her?book.

I moved to Kansas City for work. My lifelong friends were in different parts of the country. I could definitely relate. I had the same problem when I first moved?here.

And when I read about Bertsche attending a cookie exchange to meet friends but then conceding it wasn?t really her thing (?I?m a ?Law & Order SVU? marathon kind of girl,? she writes), I knew I was going to like this?book.

It is hard to make friends after college without coming off as psycho or?desperate.

?I?ve found that friendship advances are generally received positively, but as the asker we worry we?re imposing,? Bertsche writes. ?The last person we want to be is that girl?.?

That?s?me!

So I talked with Bertsche, 30, to steal ? er, share ? her knowledge about how to make friends in a grown-up world already filled with work and relationships and family. Her answers are edited for clarity and?brevity.

Is it possible to make lifelong friends as an?adult?

I think it is, absolutely. I think making friends is harder as an adult. Those early stages of meeting people, and then seeing them again, can be really hard. Everyone is talking about how busy they are. People feel like they don?t have time for friends, which I think is really a?shame.

Is it harder for women to make friends than?men?

I do, sorta. I hear from people on both sides. I think it sort of depends on who you are, but I think women want a level of intimacy that men don?t?need.

Is it hard for women to admit they want?friends?

Absolutely. We?re all very willing to say, ?I?m looking for a husband,? or ?I?m looking for love.? I think people are embarrassed because friends are something people should have, we think. I was so scared to put it out there. I didn?t want to say, ?I have no friends, I?m a huge loser.? There are so many women in the same boat as I was. We?re scared that we sound lonely and sad when that?s not necessarily the?case.

In your book you said finding a BFF is like dating. Tell us what you?mean.

It?s the same idea, going out and trying to meet people and find the right fit. Sometimes you have to kiss a lot of frogs to get your prince, and I think it?s the same with trying to find your princess or your best friend. It feels like dating in a sense. I felt like a weirdo with friend dating. Sometimes I would hug someone goodbye and she was like, ?Oh, we?re doing this?? I think dating and looking for friends are both about connecting and looking for people you feel comfortable with. It can be exciting and also?stressful.

**You tried a lot of different things to meet people (Meetup.com, improv class, volunteering, religious group meetings). What were some of the best things you did, or what would you suggest people?do?

Getting set up is a great option always. If you don?t know of anyone who can set you up with someone in your town, for me a book club was a really great thing. I always say joining a group that you?re interested in, that way the times you?re going to see each other are already set up. I think Meetup.com is really great way to?start.

What do you feel like you learned on your girl-date?journey?

People are open to friendship if you?re willing to make the first move. It?s not the world where ?You?re such as weirdo, stop talking to me.? Who doesn?t want more?friends?

Your book is a national best-seller. Why do you think this has resonated with so many?women?

There are lot of women going through this and until now, no one was talking about it. The world that we live in right now, people are busy and we?re inundated with these images of best friends (?Sex and the City,? ?How I Met Your Mother?) ? we think we should have that, but it can be really hard to get that level of intimacy. I?m really hoping this will give more women confidence. Reading someone else?s journey and realizing you?re going through what they went through is?comforting.

What?s a good pickup line if you?re?shy?

Finding something in common is really great. Even if it?s ?I really love your sweater.? A compliment is definitely a great way to start a conversation. Something that shows some sort of connection between you. I don?t think starting with, ?Hi, you want to be friends?? is necessarily the best?route.

Do you think the friendships you made in the year you wrote your book will?last?

I do. I went on 52 friend dates, and I don?t expect to be friends with all of them in 10 years. Now that number has dwindled some more.?? I have a good handful, more than a handful, of friends who I really think will be around for a while. One of the things about friendships that we have to keep in mind is that they don?t last forever. Some friendships are for a certain time and place in your?life.

5? years for Ore. woman who got $2.1M bogus refund

SALEM, Ore. (AP) ? A 25-year-old woman who duped the state of Oregon into giving her a $2.1 million tax refund pleaded guilty Tuesday and was sentenced to 5 1/2 years in prison.

Krystle Marie Reyes, of Salem, entered guilty pleas to one felony count of tax evasion and three counts of felony fraud. She had faced eight felony charges.

Reyes' court-appointed lawyer, Gale Rieder, said her client faced "overwhelming" evidence, The Oregonian reported (http://is.gd/hiVixm ).

Rieder said her client "wanted to take responsibility for what she'd done."

"She's remorseful and saddened by the impact on her family," the lawyer said. "She has no criminal history."

The woman received the refund on a debit card and spent about $150,000 before twice reporting the card lost or stolen. At that point the ruse was discovered. The state has recovered about $1.9 million of the money.

An Oregon Department of Revenue spokesman said Tuesday that the findings of an internal agency audit would be released Wednesday.

Reyes filed an electronic tax return in late January via Turbo Tax, erroneously reporting earnings of more than $3 million, authorities have said. Her request for a $2.1 million refund was initially red-flagged by an automated system.

The Oregonian quoted from a 24-page search warrant affidavit regarding what happened next.

The return was set aside for review by processing staff and managers for potential fraud. But "some time later," the affidavit said, a Revenue employee overrode the flagged payment and the refund was issued.

By policy, three agency employees are required to verify the override, the newspaper said. However, according to the affidavit, no one responsible for reviewing the return opened the file to look at it or looked at the W-2 form Reyes filed.

Reyes previously worked at retirement facilities or senior care homes and reported income of less than $15,000 per year in 2009 and 2010, records show.

Before her June 6 arrest, Reyes' spending spree included about $1,800 in cash to buy a 1999 Dodge Caravan and spending $851 on tires and wheels.

The affidavit says other purchases included a queen-sized air mattress, a deep fryer, an air conditioner and a cream and gray floral rug. She bought a sofa and recliner with brown leather trim.

Andrew Campbell, a senior assistant state attorney general who filed the charges against Reyes, declined to comment on Tuesday's plea deal.

New understanding of diabetes and kidney disease: Findings may lead to effective new treatments

ScienceDaily (July 23, 2012) ? Scientists at Joslin Diabetes Center have identified biological mechanisms by which glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), a gut hormone, protects against kidney disease, and also mechanisms that inhibit its actions in diabetes. The findings, which are reported today online by Diabetes, may lead to the development of new therapeutic agents that harness the actions of GLP-1 to prevent the harmful effects of hyperglycemia on renal endothelial cells.

Renal complications, also known as diabetic nephropathy, are one of the most life-threatening complications of diabetes that often lead over time to end-stage renal disease (ESRD). About a half million people in the US -- 44 percent of whom are diabetics -- have ESRD, which requires dialysis or kidney transplantation. As a result, investigating the relationship of diabetes to renal dysfunction is a major focus of diabetes research. "We are very eager to develop new treatments for diabetic kidney disease," says George King, M.D., lead author of the study, and chief scientific officer, head of the Dianne Nunnally Hoppes Laboratory for Diabetes Complications and a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School.

GLP-1 is an incretin hormone that is produced by the intestine in response to food. GLP-1 increases the secretion of insulin from the pancreas, slows absorption of glucose from the gut, and reduces the action of glucagon -- all of which lower glucose levels in the blood. In addition, GLP-1 reduces appetite. The drug, exendin-4 (marketed as Exenatide), which mimics the effects of GLP-1, is used to lower blood glucose in type 2 diabetes.

Recent studies have reported that GLP-1 improves the function of renal endothelial cells (which regulate blood clotting, immune response and blood vessel activity, among other critical functions, and are impaired by insulin resistance) and can prevent some renal pathologies in diabetic rodents. GLP-1 receptors (GLP-1R), which are abundant in the intestine, are also found in the endothelium and kidney.

The Joslin study investigated the effects of GLP-1 in non-diabetic and diabetic mice with an "overexpression" of the enzyme PKC? (protein kinase C-beta) which is produced in excess when blood glucose is high. Excess PKC? can lead to diabetes complications, including kidney disease. PKC? enhances the action of angiotensin II (Ang II), a peptide hormone that affects renal filtration and blood flow and also regulates blood pressure, which increases inflammation and accelerates the progression of kidney damage.

The study looked at the interactions of GLP-1, PKC-beta and ANG II that affect GLP-1's protective action in renal endothelial cells. "We've been interested in diabetic kidney disease for a long time, particularly the role of PKC? and Ang II in promoting kidney damage," says Dr. King. "We were interested in investigating how GLP-1 could protect against the effects of hyperglycemia on renal function."

Josin researchers made two major findings: They identified the mechanisms by which GLP-1 can induce protective actions on the glomerular (renal) endothelial cells by inhibiting the signaling pathway of Ang II and its pro-inflammatory effect; and demonstrated a dual signaling mechanism by which hyperglycemia, via PKC? activation, can increase Ang II action and inhibit GLP-1's protective effects by reducing the expression of GLP-1 receptors in the glomerular endothelial cells. "We know that people with diabetes are more sensitive to Ang II; our data suggests one reason why," says Dr. King.

The results suggest that effective therapeutic agents could be developed to enhance the effects of GLP-1R on the endothelium which may prevent glomerular endothelial dysfunction and slow the progression of diabetic nephropathy. "We now know that increased PKC? decreases GLP-1R which makes the kidney less responsive to treatment with GLP-1-based drugs. Possible new treatments could combine PKC? inhibitors with higher doses of GLP-1 agonists. GLP-1 is one potential pharmaceutical that could both lower glucose and minimize the toxic effects of Ang II to lower the risk of kidney diseases," says Dr. King.

The study was funded by the National Eye Institute (NEI), a component of the National Institutes of Health.

Part II: Filling The Roster Of Our Olympic Tech Dream Team With Dorsey, Cook And More

olympics3Yesterday, I named half of our Tech Dream Team; today, I name the remaining six and coach. Quick reminder: the basketball players are set by the London roster, so no retired players and some of the best players are injured, so this isn't necessarily the best possible roster.

Make Money at Home Report is Turning Average People with No ...

Make money at home report is now turning average people with no business experience into online entrepreneurs. the successful entrepreneurs at Marketer?s Black Book have written a new report that details the step-by-step process how to make money at home from a laptop or personal computer with zero experience.

Houston, Texas (PRWEB) July 21, 2012

Make money at home is something that a lot of the public wants to do but doesn?t know how. 2012 was a year of growth for entrepreneurs around the world. There were more startups in the first half of this year than any other year as tabulated by the Small Business Administration. Marketer?s Black Book, the Internet marketing experts, has released a new make money at home report that details step-by-step how to earn money online. what is special about this new quick-start report is that it teaches those without computer or Internet experience how to start and operate a successful company quickly online. This report is available for instant download here at this link.

The growth in the technology sector in the U.S. is often overshadowed by high unemployment figures. new census data has revealed that states like Alabama, Mississippi, California and Nevada lead the country in unemployment. according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, entrepreneur jobs have increased by over 40 percent in the last 2 years. Many of the displaced workers that have lost their jobs have found work in industries that are less traditional like Internet marketing. ?I started my company with only $150 dollars and made $13.5 million in just 4 years as a first-time entrepreneur,? said Brian Hanson, Internet Marketer and co-founder of Marketer?s Black Book.

The costs to start a business solely on the Internet have fallen dramatically over the last 5 years. the Internet domain name registrar Network Solutions used to command over $70 per year to register a .com domain name but now charges just $10. the spike in online business creation is due in part to people ditching regular 9 to 5 jobs for smaller and more focused work weeks as a business owner. the low startup costs and the complete virtual business operations are helping to increase the trend of used to be workers now turning into entrepreneurs regardless of experience levels.

The new report courtesy of Marketer?s Black Book can be downloaded to any computer, tablet PC or Internet connected mobile phone at http://www.marketersblackbook.com/income-report.
