Users may clean the computer?s registry either by utilizing a registry cleaning application or by manually cleaning it through the Windows Registry Editor (regedit.exe or regedit32.exe). However, careless manual registry clean up can cause irremediable damage. Thus, creating registry backups before cleaning or editing the computer?s registry is highly recommended.
Manually cleaning the computer?s registry must only be attempted by an individual who has expertise about it or who know what registry entries mean. It is possible for some applications to stop functioning correctly if important registry entries are modified or removed.
To clean the computer?s registry using the Registry Editor that comes bundled with Windows, users must first create a registry backup. To be able to do this, follow these steps.
- Open the ?Start? menu which can be found on the left bottom corner of the screen.
- Click ?Run.?
- On the ?Open? field of the ?Run? window, key in ?regedit? or ?regedit32.?
- Click ?OK.?
- On top of the ?Registry Editor? window, click on the ?File? item.
- Locate the ?Export? button and click on it.
- Then enter the name of the registry backup file.
- Click ?Save.?
After a backup has been created, go to the left side of the registry editor window and view how your computer is configured. Snap on the plus sign to enlarge a part of the registry editor. The most common area that is being used by users in manually removing registry files or making registry changes to software and hardware is the ?HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.?
To those who are unsure about editing the registry or making changes to their machine?s registry, it would be best to just use an application or a registry cleaning utility. There are lots of registry cleaners that are being offered over the Web and these include Regcleaner, Registry Healer, Eusing Free Registry Cleaner, TweakNow and Registry Mechanic.
All these applications basically work in a similar manner. They all scan the computer?s registry and eliminate errors it may found including references which have been left behind on the machine after uninstallation, obsolete or invalid information and other problems that must be fixed. All registry cleaning utilities give users a list of which entries are safe to delete.
